Here I go again.....I could use some more help here. I'm using saddle tanks on my Model A Roadster AV8 build as I want to maintain my rumble seat. I have and can split a Model A wishbone but I also have an unsplit 34 wishbone at my disposal. My question(s): Can I use the unsplit 34 on my Model A width axle? The first thing I noticed is it is wider than my SoCal Model A style 4" drop axle perch holes so I would have to heat and bend to make it fit.....good or bad idea? I also have the 34 axle but if I use it and decide later to put my fenders back on.....the 34 axle is to wide for doing this. Should I just split the A bones, heat and bend them to fit a rail mount setup? I do like the idea of the original style triangulated system. BTW, if I use the unsplit 34 bone, it will tie into an F1 crossmember. Am I overthinking all of this?
Split the bones, sell the fenders. No more dilemma. You can split the bones, yet mount them inboard of the rails. This will maintain your future options.
2935 Ford: Both the Model A axle and the 34 axle are the same. If you have an axle that's wider, then it's a later axle. Probably 37-41, or 42-48
Here's how I split mine using a dropped A-axle, while retaining close to the original look, good turning radius, and allowing the option of running fenders; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showpost.php?p=6945537&postcount=36
Someone here once said " take the fenders off, smash them flat so you have sheet metal to make something useful" You could sell the 34's as they are worth more than the A's, but if they are the right length to reach your F-1 mount, use them. They can easily be pinched with some heat to fit the aftermarket axle spacing.
I may be wrong but I believe a Model A axle has a 2-1/4" boss height, while a '33-'36 is only 2". Meaning the '34 bones wont fit on the A axle.
You're not wrong, it WON'T fit! Don't go boogering up a perfectly good '34 wishbone, if you're gonna modify one cut the A, it's worth about 1/4 of the '34...
It's still a problem split or unsplit,... The wrist of the wishbone wont fit on the A axle, unless you remove 1/4" of material from the boss, where the spring perch holds the wishbone and axle together. Anderson is right !
Thank you But keep in mind.....I have a SoCal drop axle and the 34 axle and will not be using the stock Model A axle.
34 wishbone 2" clevis, aftermarket axle 2 1/4" it won't fit, mill off 1/8" top and bottom....how hard is that We are hot roders, and we are a resourceful bunch You could probably squeeze the 34 wishbone together and put the perch bolts in and then heat the yoke end and let it relax. Better yet use the 34 axle you have and there will be no problem
Yes, most definately and that's what's so cool! And Yes, that is an option open to me as well. Like I mentioned....I have a tendancy to overthink things. I try to K.I.S.S. as much as possible but sometimes lots of options clouds the picture.
Split em if you have to, grind em if you have to......this is what it's all about! Guys chop original coupes all day long and are applauded for it. But bones have to be preserved? For what? Cmon guys, what are we talking about here?
Hard to argue that! So, I find out my SoCal dropped axle is narrower than the stock 34 by a couple of inches. I'm going to get the 34 axle dropped and then use it along with it's unsplit wishbone. Problem solved! Thanks all!
