I was given a 34 pickup frame that has seen better days. I still need to pick it up so haven't done any measuring yet but I was thinking, (I know, dangerous), could I use the X member in my A. I would be a nice way to get stock trans mounts and stiffen the chassis at the same time. Anyone ever done this or have an opinion? Oh yeah, the car will be running a 48 flathead and three speed w\ the 48 banjo rear.
The difference in the height of the frame rails might be a problem.Four in. on the A and around six in. for the 34.You would have to taper the x-member where it meets the A frame,And If the car isn"t chaneled it might show under the frame looking frome the side.
A couple of guys on here have used the 34X, it was also written up decades ago. I used a 39 but got carried away with the fit, sectioned it and then boxed the A where it met and continued inside for about a foot; front and rear. The stock 39X was actually inside the outer rails from end to end, dont know about 34. I used the following link for ideas rather than reinvent the wheel. It made using a C4 on a flathead a snap. http://www.dagelsstreetrods.com/super_x_crossmember.htm I posted the pix over a year ago but they are long gone from the server.
I've never done this myself but had a friend do it and it made one slick frame. Like has already been said it sure stiffened up the A frame and and made the flathead swap one sweeet deal. The guy that did it is one of those PERFECTIONISTS and when he was done you would swear it came off HENRY'S****embly line. Frank
