I have a pretty healthy 347 stroker I build for my early mustang. Have a stout C4 tranny with a 2200 or so stall. 8 inch rear end. If I was to put a 4.62 posi in it, how soon would it be before I pull it out? This car was built for weekends to feel young again. Will be on the highway some, and I plan to take her to the track once in a while.
What rear tire size are you running? I can't imagine running 4.62s for anything but dragstrip use. Malcolm
What's your cam / powerband, 4.62 gears and a 2200 stall don't match up, if you do manage to hook up the 8" won't last long.
268 comp cam, Balanced forged rotating assembly, alum heads, about 10.5 comp. 600 elderbrock carb.... Headers and what not. Tires have yet to be decided. Im using the stck 14's right now. Single legger, will spin at will right now. I know the 4.62 would be over kill, but price is right.
Listen to cracker head - doesn't matter that it is cheap you engine is going to rev itself to death. if your 347 truly is healthy it will certainly still get up and booge with 3.25 or 3.5 and if it is what you want to do it's going to light up the tyres wven with 3.25. I have healthy Windsor with and 3.25 rear with 31" tyres on 15 inch rims and it will light the tyres.
I'm coming up with about 3500 rpm at 60 mph with a 27" tall tire. Your 14" tires probably aren't that tall, so it would be actually worse. Not something you would want on the highway without overdrive.
That cam is small for a 302 let alone a 347 so I figure thats way too much gear . . . and if it hooks up at all that 8" is done. I broke a drivers side axle with 300rhwp in a 306 and then ditched it for a 9" Stall speed probably isn't that far off but with no overdrive and especially your cam choice you really don't need more than a 3.55 gear probably best with a 3.25. Rear gear dope is nasty enough to me to build the center section the right way the first time
