Not as purdy as most of them on this thread but I drive the wheels off of my 36 with a 330" Desoto.

  2. Was there a practical reason for the increased size of the 36 grill shell over the 35? Did the 35s having cooling issues? Just curious.

I’m not sure Dan. The radiators are the same size, so my guess is, it was more about the stamping of them.

I've wondered that same thing too. My guess was cooling issues but not if the radiators were the same size.

    Here’s a ‘36.5 I saw a while back:

a few subtleties caught my attention on this one.

I have a 36 radiator that came from, I assume, from the same ton and a half grain truck as my 36 cab. It seems to be a lot thicker than other period radiators I have seen on trucks that started out as pickups.

My conclusion is that larger trucks needed a bigger radiator for heavy load applications. Since all trucks shared a common shell, the pickups got the thicker (deeper) shell when the radiator was upgraded in heavier trucks for 1936.

Not that I know of. I have cabs and grilles from a lot of big trucks and they are all the same thickness. They all got the same radiator from what I have found.

The 36 is probably an 1.5” thicker than the 35, but that’s the only one. They did have a few that were flatter at the bottom, that didn’t have the pronounced chin and I am not sure why. Maybe they were farming it out to different vendors or plants?

Check out this thread if you haven’t seen it already.

Just saw the nicest ‘35 pickup I’ve ever seen this evening. The Sheetmetal & paint were flawless.
