Today I finished up with making a motorcycle gas tank which we had to do to learn to use the tools. Now I get to work on the car again. I took the skin off of the decklid today.

Today I got the inner and outer of the decklid cleaned up fairly well. The skin isn't too bad it just needs a few rust holes filled and some minor dents taken out. The inner structure is a little rougher. It has a lot more rust and dents to repair. The inner stucture and the skin do fit in the trunk opening fairly well. I will have to make all new trunk gutters due to some farmer goober welds.

Picked up a '40 Ford sway bar today. Jamie is finally happy now.

  11. Novice question here, what will you put on the insides of the deck lid to keep it from rusting again once you make the repairs and put the deck lid skin back on?

  12. My suggestion would be zinc primer. I've had good luck with that and you can weld through it too.

I will use weld through primer on the inside of the decklid. Its should work out fairly well.

  14. Thanks guys. I always wondered what to use as I'll be replacing some panels on my Ranchero in the near future and I want to ensure I coat the interior panels before welding on the new outter panel.

Keep it up Kellan! Looks like it's coming together well! Sure would be cool if you cruised it to the pileup!

As you can see in the pics the trunk gutters are mostly shot. Today I started to make new gutters. The pieces are fairly close to the shape of the body and the decklid skin.

Those gutters look good. How did you get the curve in them?

I used a brake to put the 90 in them first then I used a kick stretcher to put the curve in them. It is actually 2 L-shaped pieces that will make the U-shaped channel. This makes it possible to get the shape and it should make it a little stronger too.

I did them in one peice using a special die in my planishing hammer. It took a long time stretching each side of the channel a little at a time. Good thinking!!

I have the trunk gutter pieces welded together now. I used the lid skin to set the shape by clamping the pieces to it with 1/8 inch spacers to set the gap. I then was able to fit the corners. I have to fix a few stress cracks around the decklid opening and then I will put the new gutter in.

The factory seam between the roof and the decklid opening was rusted out and there was a stress crack along the beltline on both sides. Today I started to patch those issues. I have the drivers side tacked together. I would have taken more pics but my camera died hopefully tomorrow I can get more pics.
