Projects '35 Plymouth coupe build

This will be a build thread for my long time ongoing Plymouth project. This project has been put aside many times for other cars, house projects etc. Been collecting parts and ideas for years, and now its time to put it together.

So, its a '35 Plymouth rumble seat coupe, and the plan for it has mostly been an early 60's / late 50's looking build( even though it will be hiding an ifs and k-link underneath). The engine will be a '67 327" detailed with old speed parts I've been collecting. More info comes along the thread.

This is how it sits at the moment. I will be posting progress updates, and some old build photos when I find them.

 

Got some more stuff primered the other day. Hopefully I'll have the frame painted black by next week so I can start putting it together.

 

Started working on the dash, preparing for paint. Will be using these old SW gauges. Made up a set of cardboard circles to try different layouts. I have not decided which one to go for yet. The last one will require ash-tray delete as well.

 

I have these wheels for it. But it might end up with 40's steel rims with center hub caps. We'll see..

Been working on the headlight buckets. Had to relocate the trimring fastening. These came of a Volvo truck were they where mounted from the side of the grill surrounding. I will have them mounted downwards.

 

A photo from when I was mocking up the 2,5" stainless exhaust. Will be finishing up the front pieces when the engine is in position.

 

Some suspension parts is coming together.

 

The ch***is is now on the ground on it's own feet. Still a few small things to do before the body goes on. Got the 327 back from machine shop, with fresh bores, balanced and reground. My plan is to get the engine in the ch***is and finish exhaust before body goes on.

 

Engine is now a finished longblock except for pushrods. On to exhaust next.

 

It has now been a long time since I posted here, but I've made quite some progress on this project. I Will post some updates.

 

Door hinges were very pitted and had previously been repaired and welded, and so I decided to replace these so that the doors wouldn't fall off. Could not find any new replacement for the Plymouth but went ahead and ordered complete hinges for Chevy truck which seemed very similar. These new hinges worked out well after some modifications. Another thing checked off the list. Body prepped for a final layer of clear on the last image.

 

Really like the old Mopar coupes. Good job so far.

I didn't know MOPAR offered a 327 ci engine. Always see some weird stuff on the HAMB. Nice coupe, though. Should be a head turner. A friend of mine who was an old time custom builder put me wise to F100 pickup hinges --- if you ever build one with suicide doors.

 

Great looking coupe and some cl***y parts being put to use. This will be a looker when you're done. Very nice job!!

Thanks, everyone for the encouraging words. The dashboard is now coming together too. Working a little here and there when I have parts gathered. Just received my tachometer back from Chris Schlaff who made a great job converting it and matching it to the other gauges. Turnsignal switch will go in the empty hole.

 

Does anyone know what car these taillights come from? I bought a set of 3 a long time ago, with the plan of having one spare. But one was cracked when I received them. They had a painted metal frame that I have welded into the fenders. The gl***es say DO-RAY Lamp Co Chicago and one gl*** is marked 1203.

 

Looks like a clearance light for a truck cab......

By the way, does someone know who sells the windshield frame stainless joint covers? The frame seems to be an inch wide. Same as Ford perhaps..

 

Just a rear-end jack-stand picture. Aaaalmost done underneath.

 

The wiring is now finished, and the rear gl*** is in place. Headliner and door gl*** next.

 

Your going to be in the weeds with that ride height. With all the potholes I'm my area, I would be scared to tear that sweet looking ride up sitting that low. Nice ride.
