I don't see a pushrod guide plate and the valve doesn't stick up much past the keepers for a rocker tip guide so what holds everything in alignment?
Yes,,,,,one pushrod will do it,,,,,GM,,,,parts store,,,,whichever you prefer . Oreillys has it for $2.99,,,,,,,,Melling,,,,# MPR34B,,,,,that is for a 70 350,,,,with 7.8 length pushrods . Made in USA . Tommy
Lol,,,,the pushrod guide hole,,,,that round hole in the head,,,,like all early chevy engines had,,,,look at the first pic closely .
Thanks for the part numbers. Went up to Clark County Speed to see my buddy @oj, picked up the pushrods. Got a magnetic probe at Harbor Freight and was able pull out the pushrod. But as you can see the ball broke off and it could have gone anywhere it’s so small. I guess I’ll have to pull the intake anyway. It might be in the pan but who knows !
Yeah,,,,you’re probably right . You can at least check and be sure,,,,,maybe you could get lucky and it will be lying near the lifter area . Might try your magnet feeling around and strike pay dirt,,,,you never know . Good luck,,,,,I think it’s gonna work out okay for you . Tommy
Thanks Tommy, yeah hopefully I’ll get lucky. I can drain the oil and hope it comes out. I can draw it to the hole with a magnet.
This sounds like the perfect excuse to borrow or buy a borescope camera. Even if it means removing the distributor, you could snake it into the lifter valley and do some serious snooping around. It should be no problem at all to feed the probe into the oil pan drain hole and see what might be going on in there as well.
Good news !! Nothing came out of the drain plug, not surprising. Pulled the intake, found it down next to the dizzy drive shaft. Using two magnetic probes and my wife waiting to grab it. I was able to lift it out. Yay !! It would have done damage as it was riding on ghe dizzy shaft. Consider my self lucky Off to the NAPA for gaskets and oil
Distributor shaft down where it engages with the drive( the forked shaft). It was resting against the distributor shaft, would have ground up slowly.
Mounting bracket for a Moon breather???? What’s with that? We should see the photo of your rocker arm cover and the breather location.
The tip of the valve looks to be a little banged up, try to dress up those edges. Also look at the rocker arm, those cylinder heads use “guided” rockers, there are ribs on the rockers to hold it inline with the valve stem. If it’s chewed up you might consider replacing it.
Sorry it the mounting bolts on the inside of the valve cover the the breather goes on. No bracket, just the bolt head hit the rocker and I think locked it up somehow
I think it was riding against the distributor shaft cause it has witness marks on the side near the end. Whatever happened, it’s out now Ran by the NAPA after dinner and got gaskets and oil, reassembly tomorrow
Yes I looked close, looks like a round hole way bigger than the push rod, I remember a slot with not much clearance to pushrod, maybe the slot is farther down.. See post #47.
The slot was changed to a hole when the guided rocker came into use. I called the rockers guided, actually Chevrolet termed them self aligning, those ribs on the rocker keep it aligned and the pushrods don’t rub on the slots in the heads as before.
Geezus not much of a guide. I thought that's how they aliened from top view of rocker in first few pics but never knew chevy did it like the Fords did, albeit a lot more precariously.
