Okay I searched and didn't find anything. Me and my buddy pulled his 56 rocket to my house to get it ready to go in his car. Its a 54 Oldsmobile 2 door hard top. Anyway my question is when I put that complete engine on the stand can that back flange hold all of it? Or do I need to support the front were the front mount is.
Are you asking if an engine stand can hold up an engine by the bolt holes in the back of the block? Yes, it can. If there's some other flange involved, then i don't know, you will need to give a better description.
Also, what motor are you talking about. You mention a '56 rocket'. The Oldsmobile Rocket available in 1956 was a 324ci motor. 350ci motors didn't come out until 68.
Ya the bolt holes that the trans would bolt to. Their are 4 tapped holes. I my self am into sbc. So it looked to me the casting could snap. That would be the last thing I would want to happen.
Should be a 324ci motor then. Quick and easy check. Is the number '10' stamped on the centre exhaust port? If so, then it's most likely a 1956 motor.

It means the heads are from a 1955 Olds 324. Now, that could mean that the block is a 56 and the heads were swapped, or (more likely) the entire motor was replaced with one from 1955 at some point in the cars life.
There will be a cast in set of numbers on the bell housing. Should be plainly visible on the top near the vent holes. 5 or so digits I believe. Post them up.
From what I have, that block casting corresponds with a 1954-1956 block. Should be a 1956 block. However, number 8 heads are 1955 heads. Not sure why there was the change, as the 56 (number 10) heads are more desirable. Who knows, there could have been damage in the past. Or maybe the heads were hopped up and swapped on.
