This friend of mine......Ed yeah Ed, is running an 350 TH that was leakin like crazy. I keep tellin him that real hot rods have 3 pedals, but he wont listen. Anyway, I pulled the******* out of my....I mean Ed's car. After a little bit of inspection, I noticed a few things. Here's my questions. The front pump seal seat area seems to have a sizeable nick in it. Not on the inner diameter but along the bottom (if it were a cup, it would be at the bottom of the cup). Will this cause a problem? I was planning on replacing the front pump gasket. Is this a big job? Does it require special knowledge or can it be done by the average short busser mechanic such as myself? We talkin like rebuilding a 10 speed or the space shuttle? I also notice that fluid seems to be leaking from the speedo connection. I have no speedo cable, so this kinda makes sense. What kinda leak will not havin the speedo cable cause? Thanks for the inputs in advance folks!
Hey Crease, tell 'Ed' that if his front pump gasket and seal are leaking, now would probably be a most advisable time to replace that front pump if it's been a while since the******* has been rebuilt. It will solve the nick near the front seal and the gasket problem all at once. The front pump is not rocket science but 'Ed' will want a very clean work area to change it in. What I used to do on the speedo leak (if there wasn't a speedo cable to plug in), is to take the threaded portion (nut/sleeve thingy)from around an old speedo cable end, epoxy (don't weld, it is sometimes plastic or potmetal) a small metal disk over the hole (like a quarter or a slug from an electrical box), swipe a little silicone sealer on the threads of the newly made 'cap' and screw in on where it would normally go to secure the cable into the driven gear holder. That should keep some of the bigger red spots off the driveway. LOL Big Daddy Eric
Hey I built a 350 once. it was easy. I had a lot of parts left over. It took 12 qt.s of fluid to make it move the car. It worked until the cops hauled it off for being ugly in a respectable neighborhood. pogo
Nick in pump housing shouldn't be a problem, unless it is damaging seal. I use Permatex on seat where it mates to housing. Speedo has o-ring inside & out, replacing those should stop leak unless totally worn out. If you are not goung to run speedo cable could just leave plastic gear shaft out fill hole with sealer put new o-ring on outside of housing.
Crease, The nick you are refering to(If its the one between seal area & pump bushing) is put there by the factory as a drainback hole. Be damn sure to replace the large "O" ring that goes around pump & all the sealing washers on the pump bolts.Just tighten the pump bolts in an alternating pattern until pump is seated. Torque pump bolts to 10ftlb.DAVE
