Hello fellow wrenchers. I would like to hear from anyone who has sucessfully done this. Our engine is a '84 351W and the C4 is the small bell housing variety. We got the engine installed into the engine compartment using reversed mustang mounts we found out about on line and a re-worked rear crossmember works well so no issues there.

I never knew there were 2 different sizes of C4's but apartently there is a small bell housing and a large (C6?) version. Anyway, we got the odd small one and the flywheel the bone yard sold us was too big around to fit. (they sold us the ******, too!) So, a big question mark about what flywheel and starter to use.
It would be cool if there was some way to mount alternator and steering pump using bone yard parts without too much modifications. I like modifying stuff but we are in a time crunch here and want to avoid excess tinkering. Any other tips on this swap would be greatly appreciated, too. Oh, the steering was converted to R&P some years back so no clearance problems there. Many thanks for this valuable forum.

I think there are 2 different 157 tooth flex plates, I believe the difference is in the counter weights. make sure you get one for your year 351.

Send a PM to Rockabillykat666 aka Johnny on the group . He has a 351w in his 55 Fairlane with a AOD . He can tell you everything that you will need to do .
Really won't be any different that a 302/C4 swap except the engine is a little wider & heaver !

Jim,there is actually a big difference the AOD flexplates were primarily 50 oz balance and 164 tooth only,351W's use a 28oz balance like early 289-302's(pre 1980) the early C4 (small bell housing)use a 157 tooth flexplate 28oz balance, but that's not "the rest of the story" the early small bell housing C4 also needs to have the early matching torque converter.Member Screenz has been down that road already and you may recall He has had some starter issues.

There is only one STOCK 157 tooth, 28 oz flexplate that I know of. OEM Part Number(s): C3AZ6375L It can be found at rock auto for
under $38. The part number is ATP Z126.

There was a 148 tooth small bellhousing C4 that was for the 6 cyl application so just make sure you don't get that one. As far as aftermarket brands then they are available in 50 oz and 0 oz balance as well. The 351 however stayed 28 oz imbalance for its whole life.

Hey, thanks for all the input! I don't know what happened to the AOD ******. Actually, I'm not the owner of the car, it belongs to an old friend who fixed it up stock years ago and when the Y block clunked out he went and got a crate motor 351 and c4 for it. I think he just wanted something newer for reliability sake. He's in tough shape now dealing with cancer and me and the old gang are trying to help him out with getting info so we can get the old ford running again for him and his wife. The car is at his home shop in the back woods of wisconsin so we are trailering the welders and fabricating tools, etc up there and really would like to know as much as we need to at one time if possible. Imbalanced 351 - I take that to mean its externally balanced? The 164 tooth we were sold is the one that was too big to even fit inside the bell housing. sounds then like we need to pick up a 28oz. 157 tooth balance flexplate and 70's torque converter to match. I wonder if a mini starter would solve the starter problems. That's a big help, thanks. I sent the links to another guy who will go shopping. Also sending a link to this forum in case the others have questions. Much obliged for all your help. I'll have more questions, I'm sure.
