I'm trying to help a friend with his "M" engine and filter clearance in a '34 chassis. There are two adapters that I've found, M 6880-A50 and D8UE-6884-AA, but not sure if either will fit this engine. A factory angled adapter is the first choice over remote relocation. Thanks.

Bob, would a short filter solve your clearance issues? I have run a short Volvo filter on sbf engines in the past, they are only about 3 inches long. Not sure if the 351M takes the same filter base as a sbf but thought I would throw that out.

If you need it , I can dig out the Volvo part number.

I believe the SBF/C/M/BBF all take the same filters. The Wix 51335 is about 2", reportedly the 51311 is a little longer.

I think George is right about the Ford family all using the same screw on base, and also about that filter being only about 2 inches long. I have used the Volvo filter in two engine swaps, a 289 in an AH Sprite and a 302 in my Jeep pickup. It really solves a lot of clearance issues and you can pick the filter up at any Advance Auto or Autozone.

I always forget the number of the filter but when I would go to buy one I just looked in the book at the parts store and it was the most common filter Volvo used in the mid 70's and beyond. George could be right on that part number, but I haven't used Wix so the number doesn't ring any bells with me.

Thanks Don and George. I tried a Motorcraft FL300 but it was too long. I am 99% sure the "M" Fords use the same common PH8A style Ford filters. I will look for the Volvo and Wix numbers and see if any will work.

That Volvo filter is super short, Bob. It actually takes up less room than a filter on the angled adapter and puts the filter on a better angle than the adapter for removal, etc.

When I swapped the 5.0 into the Jeep pickup there was literally about 2.5 inches between the filter mounting surface and the suspension. I could just barely drop that Volvo filter down in there and turn it on, but it did clear. Luckily, the engine torques the other way, so it never hit.

I'm sure George is right about that Wix number, so look at one and you will be surprised how short it is.

    Don,
The shorter filter would be much better than an angled adapter, and cheaper! I'll have to visit the local parts stores and look for the filters you and George have suggested. Thanks. :)

TR, I'm sure you posted info about the A50 adapter, then the post disappeared! Thanks anyway for your input.

I use the 51335 on an inline tranny filter. Might sound silly but it seems the 1st thought when seen is....that's a cute little filter.

Update. According to my '82 Fram master catalog, Volvos of that era used a PH16, which crosses to a Motorcraft FL300. That's what was tried initially and found to be too long, as they're just over 3 1/2" high. The Wix #51335, however, is only about 2 7/8" high (long), has similar pressure relief, anti-drain back, and gasket OD/ID, according to the Fram PH3512 it crosses with. The Wix was bought and found to fit perfect!
My concern was the only application of this filter, as of '82, being a Renault! I advised my buddy to contact Wix and make sure he would be OK running this filter on his V8, and was told to simply change the filter more often and there would be no problems.
Thanks for the help Don and George. The problem was solved without having to purchase an adapter or going remote. :)

Bob, while I was out running errands today I stopped at Advance Auto with the intention of getting you the correct part number for that very short filter. I even took my camera and was going to shoot a picture of it for you. But their Purolator book they have hanging there only went back to 1990, so I tried getting the guy (kid) on the computer to find it for me. THAT WAS FUTILE ! He couldn't find it and said they must have discontinued the short one.

With a lot of mid 70's Volvos still running around I doubt they would have discontinued them. Next time I am at NAPA I will see if they have on older filter book I can look through.

  11. You are welcome Bob, the adapter M 6880-A50 will work for future reference, 351/400 M included, and any with a 3/4"-16 thread filter and any engine that takes the FL-1A Filter, thank you, TR

Well, I called Purolator and the tech guy there was very helpful. He says the filter for the Volvos is L14670, but it is about 3.5 inches long. I don't think the ones I used were that size, but time may be making me remember it wrong. He said that is their shortest one for the Volvos.

To compare, the FL1A has a 3/4-16 thread with bypass at 11-14 psi. The 51335 has the same thread with bypass at 8-11 psi.

The M 6880-A50 angles the filter 90 degrees from the original orientation and has a tab cast into it the keep it from rotating.

The D8UE-6884-AA rotates the filter about 45 degrees from original location and has ports (not always drilled/tapped) for oil cooler lines, oil pressure sensors.

I think they both accept fl1 a style filters.

    A Toyota 22R uses the short version of a FL1A or PH8A.

The mid 80's truck 4wd called for for the larger filter and the 2wd called for a small filter. The smaller one will screw on the block but not sure of the bypass valve psi.
We always ran the FL1A's or Wix 51515 in place of the short Toyota filter.

Toyota Filter SizesFilter Part # Width - Height
    Mini-Truck 08922-02011 -------- 2.97" - 3.30"
    Mini-Truck Alt# 90915-YZZB9
    Mini-Truck Turbo 15600-25010

You can use these Toyota #'s to cross over to Name brand filters.

I use Wix, but here's some Fram numbers, believe he said they're too long
PH-8A is the long filter, standard Ford V8 filter
PH-43 is shorter. Standard Mopar V8 filter
PH-16 is shorter still. Used on early 80s 351W Police Interceptors with the oil cooler adaptor
reportedly Wix 51331 is betweeen the PH-16 & the 51335
