Could use some pictures of the alternator mounting on a 351W passenger side. Suggestions welcome. Thanks.
I cut mine out of some 1/8th inch steel plate. Had to modify it to pull it in a little farther to accommodate the Model A hood and got creative with the water pump hose and plumbing because I went with a different pump to put the bottom outlet on the passenger side. Tight fit. Yes, it is a 351W out of a '77 Ford/Merc.
I used the stock aluminum bracket, that fits on the end of the head. Because I was using a GM alternator, and it uses a 3/8 bolt for pivot, I installed a threaded insert to take that.
What @osage orange pictured is pretty much a typical set-up that Ford used (theirs was a 2-piece bracket). Ford offered a V-belt standard rotation water pump with the inlet on either side. Is there something in particular you have in mind?
A friend of mine built this 32 and drove it to Deuce days NW twice and did a Road trip to Memphis in it. I'm thinking that is the stock aluminum bracket. I took the above two photos at Deuce Days NW in 2019. one of the guys who was there this year posted this one. Not sure who owns it now because it has been sold a time or two since 2019.
I used the stock aluminum bracket also , but mine is flipper upwards from the bracket instead of downwards . I used early Chevrolet adjustment bracket or arm also . I’d like to see what the lower adjustment bracket looks like on the 32 pictured with alternator downwards from the bracket .
Thanks for the replys. I just rebuilt a 351W and it didn't come with the alternator bracket. Yes, I can order an after market but, I could also make one if I knew what the stock bracketry looked like.
there are pictures of the stock setup on the internets. You need a mostly flat plate with three holes, and a narrow adjuster bracket, and a spacer behind the alternator, and the weird bracket that bolts to the head, and the big bolt threads into. The spacer has a 7/16" hole for the long bolt. But that's assuming you're using a Ford alternator, it's a little bit different using a GM or other alternator, which take a 3/8" bolt, and the front/back spacing is different. We can only guess which you have in mind. Also beware that Ford changed water pumps a lot, and you need to make sure your pump has these earlier 1960s type mounting bosses on it. here are some pictures that might help you figure it out.
The 351W block is a late 1984 casting with 1985 heads and exhaust manifolds. Thanks to those who have responded and the pictures. Squirrel, I remember watching you drag a red chevy II up at a meet in Wisconsin, probably a dozen years ago. Always appreciate reading your responses to questions on HAMB.
OEM brackets are one piece Ford used on different engine designs . I took alt , power steering and ac brackets and pulleys from 351M and they ended up on 302 in my 48 pickup . Just as they were built for 302 . Next one you try nothing will fit . Leave it to Furd many mid year changes , why ?
