After lots of reading and help from this forum and a few others. I've decided to keep a Ford in my Ford. I want big power on a $6k budget, so I'm going turbo. I have a 351W roller from a 94 bronco as my start. I'll be getting a 4R70W from a 01 or 02 Mustang 3.8 V6 car. I'll run a single turbo, Megasquirt efi with EDIS and either a Baumann controller, or manual valve body for the trans. The 351W will get a stock style rebuild except for ARP fasteners, f303 cam, and forged pistons. 80lb injectors, Gt40p Explorer heads, I'm not sure what intake I'll use. I'll be using headers turned upside down with a crossover to the p***enger side. The turbo will sit where the battery used to be(It's in the trunk now). Intercooler behind the grill. Possible meth injection. I have a 57 wagon 9" rear with 3.00 gears in the car now. I want to run 10.99 in the quarter and have a fun street car. I don't think I'll have any problems meeting that goal. I'm shooting for 500-550rwhp on 92 octane. I have a few questions. Will I have clearance to run headers upside down with the prothane mustang engine mounts? Or will I hit the upper control arms? How much room is there to run a downpipe by the firewall on the p***enger side, if I run the headers forward. 4" would be preferred. I know I'll need a front sump oil pan and timing cover with dipstick. Any suggestions on baffled extra capacity pans? I want the most capacity I can get without hanging below the stock crossmember. I'd like to upgrade to an aluminum radiator and eventually add A/C. What radiator and condensor setups are suggested? Suggestions for electric cooling fans? I'll use the factory serpentine belt setup from the bronco if it fits. I'll be running an alt, PS pump, AC compressor and water pump. I'm planning on using an inline 340LPH pump with the LS1 Corvette filter/regulator. All running from the stock pickup in the tank.
That 4R70W ****** is computer controlled...just wanted to make sure you're aware of that. Opps!...just saw your comment on the manual controller.
Headers upside down should not be an issue. Even if close, you will not hit the control arms. There is a plate behind the arm that could be trimmed a bit if needed. Room for down pipe will not be an issue. Here is your pan: Canton 15-680s (8 quart) Radiator: 65-66 Mustang 302/351 conversion radiator (top on p*** side, bottom on drivers) bolts right in. Hi, I don't know if that trick pan will fit in your car because of the cross member. I have a brand new stock oil pan that will fit, I also have a set of used GT40P heads unmolested. You can have the heads and the pan for $215 plus shipping if interested.
You might find some usable info in this thread: http://www.fordmuscleforums.com/tra...verdrive-transmission-older-cl***ic-ford.html
Thanks for the re***urance on the downpipe and header fitment. That's a sweet pan, but might be overkill for what I'm doing. The radiator is nice and only $399 with fan and shroud, It's supposed to cool 600hp. That's probably what it'll cost to get it running. Trans upgrades, better converter, Vintage air, etc, weren't in my total. But, I was looking at $6k for just the FE stroker I was planning on before, and it was only going to be 450hp, and without EFI and OD. I'll keep this in mind. What do you think shipping would be to 97003 residential? Good read, I found that a couple weeks ago. That's one of the posts that convinced me to go with the 4R70W.
Check with EFI guy on cl***ic Broncos forum he will be a big help with EFI and electronic controlled transmissions. He will show you how to use oem parts to do your install
If you look close, that pan starts out as a standard pan, just wider at the bottom. With the round cross member, it should not be a problem at all.
I sent him a message. But from reading his posts, I think he can only help if I run factory efi. That's not something I'm interested in doing.
You might want to check out this site: www.clickclickracing.com it is an all Ford transmission site some of the guys on there with similar builds to yours have used 4R70 guts in early AOD cases to gain strength and be non-computer,that may help with your overall budget.
While I think the 6k price is ridiculous I would be interested in seeing it if you can make all that happen for that low price. lol
That's an option, but I'd rather not have to mess with a TV cable. Well, eventually we'll see what it costs. I might use the torn down 351W I have now for mockup and buy a running 351W later. That would save me $1000-1500 in machine work and parts. The other plus is if I mess up the tune, I'm only out a $300 stock short block. I've found a couple turbo kits for around $1500, but they are for fox body mustangs and I don't think the headers will work(they turn down too soon and would hit the a arms). I think I'll have around $1200 in efi, wiring and trans controller. Trans will be arond $300 from a late model 3.8L mustang, eventually it'll get beefed up. I think I can get it together and running for $6k. And another $2-3k later on.
