Killer build. Nice work and great ideas. 35 / 36 Phaetons rule! But I am a lil biased We chopped my stock roof irons and bows down about 3" on my '35 Phaeton and it fold down great still... -Shiny
Thanks 29ehv8. Any photos of your pheaton. Would love to see the profile with 3 inch chop. Mine should be about 2 inches lower than standard with this screen. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
put in some lowering blocks to get the back down. Chassis Engineering rear spring kit Seems to sit to high in the back without them. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
started making the transmission tunnel and floor plates. All in place, just need to final weld and put nut serts in floor to bolt it all down. Also made bottom mount for steering column. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Darren, that floor looks great good to see your making good progress. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Thanks guys, about time you posted some photos of your 35 Oppy. Does any one have photos of Carson style roofs on phaetons, this is my next part of the project. Making the frame. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
That Cal Plating sedan delivery was built by Frank Kurtis of Kurtis Kraft that owned Indy in the late 40's & 50's Is it still around?
Saw this pic on Instagram done by Norwell. I think it looks killer. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Damn, that's a cool pic. Might have to print that off and hang in the shed. Actually it would make a great screen saver on the phone. Thanks Binga. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
started making the roof. Took me about 4 hrs just to bend up the bottom plate. Want the roof to look like the one on the blue phaeton in the picture, but it will be a lift off. Also made a gear stick yesterday. Looks a bit weird but it was the only way to get it to clear everything going through the gears. Now that I know where both ends need to be I might be able to make another one that looks better. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Got some more bows made up, pretty happy with shape so far. Will soften up with padding and material. Have to reshape lower bottom of rear frame as I will be putting stainless bar and timber bows to mimic original bows. Do some more tomorrow. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Personally I think the rear corner of the top on the blue one, as well as your taped version is too square and upright for the wonderful round lines of the rest of the car and especially the streamlined look of the DuVall style windshield.
I agree and Blackroad, that's not to take away from your build which I've followed and dug from the start. The top looks too "Model A'ish"; squared up with the triangle shaped rear side opening. IMHO, would look better with rounded rear roof corners as well as rounded rear side window openings like the Norwell illustration on this page. Not an extreme like the So Cal Plating roofline, but something that works better with the 36 lines.
Sorry Black road but I'm also going with Rikster and Hot Rods Ta Hell too. The rear corner needs to be softer more like the Norwell illustration. But that is just my opinion.
Thoughts, is this more like it. More like the Wayne Maffrey phaeton. Moved the rear bow down and in about 3/4 inch and changed shape of opening. Might need to move rear bow in and down a bit more. I know it still looks a little sharp on rear bow but this will soften with padding. Do you think the rear winow opening should lean forward a bit more. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Hmmm. Are you going for the padded, Carson style, or do you want it to look more like an original, folding top? I kinda like your first version better, the illustration lacks enough crown. And, I'm weird, I love the look of the folding top bows. How hard would it be, since you've done all this fabulous work, to make folding bows? With your fabrication skills and great eye, a real folding top would be a cinch. The package tray would have to go away, but otherwise, it'd be do-able. The car is fantasic, either way. Brian
Definitely don't want the full rounded padded Carson top. I prefer the look of bows. However, I can not stand the look of the top when it is folded down. My preference is to run most of the time with no top at All, however living where I do winter gets pretty cold so I need something. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I like this look better. Bit hard to tell from that angle but I think the rear opening needs to lean forward a bit more like in your last pic.
Already looks a lot better. I photoshopped the rear bow a bit lower and there fore the back portion gets a bit steeper angle forward.
Thanks Rikster, x38 PM'd me saying the rear pillar should be the same angle as the back of the roof, I will mock it up tonight. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Same or close to the same angle. Here is one Photoshopped with a slightly different angle. which I think looks even better.
Ok, this as far as I got today, have mocked up the angle at the back, tack welded all the bows in place, need to make a steel cover for the header. Thanks for all the feedback. I think it is getting there. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
first off, I lovet this car. great craftsmanship. I gotta say, I may be in the minority, but I like the original top configuration better.
If I may insert my 2c: With reference to the pictures in your post #192, I agree with the previous comments that the rear corner/rear bow could be softened a little; I think that shortening (lowering) the bow a little and counting on the padding to soften it the rest of the way are the solutions. I also agree with Brian's comment that the two middle bows add a lot to the form and might be raised just slightly to give a little more definition and to avoid the too-flat, plank-like look that plaques some chopped phaeton tops. I DISAGREE strenuously about revising the shape of the side window. I think you had a perfect, beautiful line with the acute angle in the earlier post; filling in the V with the panel in post #199 slams the brakes on the speedy look of the first pictures. I look at Dick Falk's '35 tub as the most nearly perfect example of how these phaetons ought to look: I think the area around the rear bow of Dick's car shows how the stock bow construction ought to look on a slightly chopped top; I think that the more steeply angled rear bow in your #192 picture looks even better on your custom 2-door profile. Please, open the side back up again!
Me too. That's a pretty phaeton, 50fraud, the profile is spot on. We saw a couple examples of poorly chopped long roofs at Detroit a day ago, with too-flat roofs. The center bows need to come up a smidge to make 'em look right.
