The top on Dick's car is perect for this type of car, which ha a more Hot Rod feel to it. The car has a lot of early custom styling, but the stance is more hot rod style. But if you want a more custom feel, then this type of side window opening will not flow with the rest of the cars style.
Good, if the car is meant to be an "updated" custom that might have been done in the '50s. Better, if the car is meant to be a phantom design conceived in the '30s. The line at the upper edge of the opening could be improved a bit, but overall this opening is the "fastest" looking of the ideas you've shown. OK if the car is meant to look stationary, like it's never going anywhere again. It's not my intention to be insulting, but this one is way too conservative for the nice work throughout the rest of the car.
I guess this would be a good time to drive/push the car outside "finished" as much as possible. Hood and hood sides installed at the right stance etc. Then take a bunch of photos from a nice distance. Not to close up tot the car since then you create a fish eye effect which you do not want. And then ask to get some Photoshop help to create a few different style and shapes for the top. The photos you took now are nice... but are to close up to the car, you cannot get the whole picture. This really is the moment to step back and look... look... look.
Sounds like a job for next weekend, I am going to mock up a couple of different shapes and then see if I can push it out. The driveway is uphill, bugger. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Ok, so I have been playing with the roof some more, I know it is not outside yet, but it is nighttime so I am just trying a few things. Firstly I thought I would show you the tools I am using to bend the tube and measure the angles. tube bender is an old plumbers pipe bender, even though it is meant to bend round tube it still works perfectly on the square tube. I also use a digital bevel box to measure the angles. I put it on the rear upright, then zero it, then put it on the window opening pillar and move it until it is on zero. Now both angles are the same. As I said I have been playing with the roof. Lowered the rear bar another 3/4 of an inch. Had splay with the shape, some look crap here are some photos just showing what I tried. Last picture is where I am at. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Got my taillight lenses, had some made with the bottom 1/3rd orange for the blinkers. Using 37 tail lamps and storks. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Ok guys, got it outside and mocked up for photos. Feel free to photo shop and comment on roof, I really want to finish frame this week. PS, if Chip Foose is watching feel free to do me a rendering. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I'd like to see the left side (ha ha--almost said driver's side) straight on for a comparative. I was initially in favor of the original style corner, but I'm questioning my judgement now. hard to swap sides for sure with the pics available. in either case I love this car. this is a project i've got in my sights somewhere down the road. keep up the good work
Here you go falconsprint63, can only take photos in the shed, sun was in the wrong spot this morning to get good photos of this side. Might try again tomorrow when my son is here to steer it. . Idea if I was going to run this style would be to put on timbers etc as per original roof. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I hope this photo loads. I tried to add the spats for you Darren just a quick one. Fyi Dad approved of that roof line haha Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Looks fantastic, love this thread, great to see it out in the sun, must be a great bit of motivation.
Definitely think I have to lose the spare. It looks way to big and is spoiling the lines of the car. Thanks Luke Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Does any one have a set of bubble skirts that they want to sell. It will save me making them. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
The car looks classy with the spare tire. But it looks great both ways. So once again I'm no help at all!
Here's the paint and roof I'm not a pro Darren some of the guys on here will be able to do a lot better than this. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Thanks Luke, it looks killer. That really gives me the motivation to get it finished. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
This car keeps getting better and better! She looks beautiful outside! Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
No worries Darren it will be great to see it finished nobody will understand what a cool car it is until they see it in the flesh. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
Thanks Rik. Amazing how different a car can look with slight changes to the roof. I am pretty happy with how the roof is now. Had to lift the second closest bow to the rear up by 1/2 an inch on the R/H side to even it all up. Looks much better and doesn't have that flat look. Posted from the TJJ App for iPhone & iPad
I'm sticking with my original vote. I like the looks of Rickster's #3. and I'd keep the spare, but tweak the mount angle of the tire itself--it looks off just a touch compared to the rear deck surface (truth in advertising here I prefer the trunkback to the flatback sedans/convertible sedans so that may skew my views). my dad's got a set of what we think are old foxcraft skirts he's finally decided not to run on his 3 window (they've been collecting dust in the basement for 20 years). he's here on the board as temporaryrod. I'll send you his email in a PM as well.
OK, Blackroad.............Finish ! You've done a fantastic build, two pats on tha' back. I've been paying close attention to the final profile of the top, you've had the Best giving advise and opinions, great thing about the HAMB. I've enjoyed two '34 Phaetons (several years back), and know the top configuration makes or breaks the car. Thanks for the Thread/ Photos....Drive Proud, You've earned IT ! smokey 2 posted from Granny's Crank Phone
