what modern rear end can i use in a 36 chev sedan? mid 70s camaro is too wide. any sugestions? thanks ray
what wheels/tires are you planning on using? 78-87 midsize GM (cutlass, regal, monte, etc) is about 2 inches narrower than the camaro, it's only 7.5" ring gear so not real strong, and has all those coil spring control arm brackets you have to cut off. 57 ford wagon 9" is a good one if you are lucky to find one
if bolt pattern isn't a issue toyota truck is stout as hell. axles are even bigger than 9" ford, narrow, 5on4.5" bc. a lot of the lowriders use them when they are "hopping" 3'+ in the air. if that don't bend it ain't no stock v8 gonna hurt it.
You may want to check out an early Chevy II rear ('62-'65). The '62-'63 rears use the '55-'64 style drop out carrier.
I built a 36 chev a few years ago with a Ford 8' from a V-8 Comet which is 5 lug and is same as other fords except full size. If you want disc brakes use Versaille rear end. If you need chev bolt pattern use first generation Camaro....OR just have a wider one narrowed not a big deal to spend a few bucks to get the fit you want.
Square body Novas 62-67 are good also but 62-63 six bangers were four lug but easy to swap drums from later V-8 car.
68 Nova under mine, fenders would fit if I used any. The Versaille (sp?) is a good fit as is the Monte
