So i've seen this blue tarp thing for the past couple of years in a town up the road a piece from me a thousand times. I always ***umed a car was under it, but for some reason my "6th hot rod sense" never was in use apparently. Well, in March i was in the town working. I drove past the ol' tarped thing and it was slightly blown off the rear. Lo-and-behold there's an old mid 30s something peeking out from the B pillar back. I wasn't sure what it was exactly because it's off the street and kind of behind a house, a bit obscured. Anyway, the house looked vacant and i thought that i ought to stop out there and see what the story was just in case someone lived there. Well, finally got around to it today. nice day for a drive so my pal Rodney and I ventured up there in my model A hot rod. Turns out the old timer that lived there was an old hot rodder, and an AWESOME guy. Didn't run us out for asking about the car, that's always a plus , and turns out he really enjoyed the model A. The car, a '36 Ford 5 window, was bought by him in 1959 and later sold it to his brother and it's sat here for some time, nice and covered. Also turns out that he lived in Albuquerque in 1955 and was in a hot rod club called the Knights, AND he still has his old t-shirt. He was thinking of "donating" it to a museum, when i told him "hey, i'm kind of a museum! i'll buy it!". Also has a lot of old little books from the 50s. At the very least he'll sell me the little books, and i can snap a photo of the shirt. So the car is possibly available and NO i'm not telling where it is because i'm hoping i can become the new owner. So, i couldn't leave without some photos, so enjoy! The engine (flattie) is in the trunk! complete, but one piston stopped firing...so they yanked the engine? And the icing on the cake, pinstriping that he said was on the car when he bought it in 1959:
At the very least, i got to meet a very nice old hot rodder and hopefully a new friend. With any luck, i told him i'd purchase the car and leave it just the way it is. dent and all
JEEEEEZZZ! How are you gonna sleep tonite without having that in your garage? Sure looks solid for an Ohio car that's been outside. Hope you get it.
haha, it's tough. i'm just thining of a way to pay for the damn thing. Talk about solid...geeze. No rust that i could see. Floors solid, still has a headliner! He took a shine to us "greasers" and really got a kick out of out projects. he seemed really glad to see us 'young guys' doing things the right way he said. i showed him pictures of some of our projects and drivers on my digital camera. He was grinnin ear to ear! i am going to stop tomorrow and ask for his brother's number (he lives in chicago). He will be in town memorial day, and unfortunately has others interested. But, i'm going to try like hell to get that coupe before hand.
Well at least you got your foot in the door. Now just hope and pray that you get it, because cars like that and in that good of shape don't come around all the time. GOOD LUCK!!!!
Do not let this car go. Somebody will be on it quick now. If you need to, let me pay for the car & hold the ***le. I'll give you two months to pay me back with fair interest. If you either lose interest or cant come up with the cash in 2 months, then i'll keep it and do it right. I think this is a fair offer. Dont let opportunities like this p*** you by. Im serious about the offer. You can check my creds with the boss here on the hamb-- im a trustworthy guy. PM me if you're into it. -scott noteboom
I just wanna see more pics out from under that tarp!!! it would look nice in your garage though!!! damn that a nice car
mow some gr*** , cut some weeds , wash a few dishes , do the hazel thang for the old dude , get yourself in the will some kind of way..
Get back over there and repair the blue tarp so that it can't be seen again....LOL. Nice find. Charlie
well i got a pocket full of money thats how ill be paying for it ace. im sure me and kevin could find you budy get him some extra cash and the car would be our in a hot min . then kevin and i would get the car and have rights to it every other weekend! hah!!!!
Just make a deal he can't refuse give him $500 to $1,000 over what you thinks it's worth and you'll get it. Some time you have to go a little extra to make sure you get it, you'll be happy later by paying more now, instead of loosing the deal. It's only money you won't find another one like this.
hi scott, thanks for the offer! I think i've got it covered. I've discussed it with the "financial advisor" of mine and i think we'll get it covered, of course if he wants some ridiculous amount for it that it. I'll keep you posted... Hey Flop, too bad you and Kevin don't know where the old girl sits And the tarp is repaired, and you can't hardly see it for the house being in the way. Not a praying guy, but i think it might be a good time to start -ace
Flop, not a bad idea. To save time, we'll just stop by Ace's. You bring the rope and the pliers, I'll bring the torches. We'll find out where that 36 is sitting.
or we could just take him to the junkyard with the crazy dogs and let the big one loose. im sure he would scream out where it is while he was running away!!!
Great find Ace!! Threads like this one are the best! It is great to see you guys chasing these things down and sharing them with us.
damn! get that ol girl ASAP... opprotunity of a lifetime... no telling what the history of that thing would be... expecially if their is striping on it prior to '59
Flop, Kevin... sure, i'll tell you where it is it's down by uh...cincinatti. yeah. that's it. way south of here. Snoop around, you'll find it. how many blue tarps can there be right?? vintagehotrods: it's giving me a stinkin heart attack thinking about it haha. i'm heading back over to the house tomorrow. hopefully he's talked to his brother about it and i can maybe get a rough idea of what they want. i'll beg borrow and steal for whatever the difference is.
Sweet looking 36! It's amazing it's stayed in that kind of condition under that tarp. You would think that a lot of rain and snow could blow under there... Good luck!
Ace, Hopefully rolling up in the Model A and being genuine will put you ahead of the high dollar hustlers. Good Luck. Ray in CT
HMMM. got a friend with an airplane. we were thinking of going for a ride today anyways. better call him and get to it. see what we can find in your neck of the woods from the air. thanks for the heads up ****ER!!
Just a p***ing thought... DON'T buy the car. Instead, help the guy get the engine back in it and get him active in hotrodding again! And, get him on the HAMB!
T-Time, he's unfortunately in failing health. i think he may have suffered a stroke at some point, and the house is up for sale soon. He's in the process of arranging to sell some items off. I'd LOVE to give him a hand most definitley! Kustombuilder: if i see planes circling, i'm shooting lucky for me the leaves are starting to sprout Ray: Didn't i meet you at Cafe 9 a few weeks back when me and carlevale played up there? if it works out i'll drive it up to the Milltown show Chad, wondered how long it would take you to notice this thread haha
just the history of this thing is pretty cool. I don't think it was ever rodded necessarily, but from what i gather the striping was definitley done either in or before '59. very simplistic, but it's awesome. being a striper myself (not stripper, ok maybe sometimes) it's amazing to see original pieces. i've got an 8ba laying in the shop just dying for a new home...i can see it now...juice brakes...8ba with 3 deuces... maybe a small block chevy and 20" billet rims....
