Projects 36 ford custom build (MISS SCARLET)

Discussion in 'Traditional Customs' started by kippers 34, Jul 5, 2013.

  1. Any time. If you ever need any specific pics let me know. If you look at hellonwheels build you will notice I got some ideas on the front crossmember and motor mounts from his work.
Hadent thought of splitting the bumper. Problem is almost all late 40's builds I can find ran bumpers so to keep with truly period correct I think I must run bumpers on this one. Thanks for the input.

  2. Today I finished off the hood top then I adjusted the gap on the back of the grill to hood gap. On the left the gap was about 1/2" so I had to close it up and the left the hood touched so I had open it. Only got one pic of this.

Here is a pic of the finished hood.

Then I wanted to lower the bottom of the fenders so I made a guide then I cut the fender.

Then I lowered the fender on to the guide and cut a piece of fender lip from the rear fender I used to repair the lip's on the rears. I tacked the fender piece and lip piece in place.

Then I took a pair of partial 37 fenders I had laying around and cut a filler piece to fill the void. I don't have an English wheel , planishing hammer, etc so this was easyer than getting the compound curve with a hammer and sand bag.

Then I tacked the filler in place.

Then I did the same on the other side. Ran out of time so fine tuning and final welding will have to wait.

I really like the new shape on the front fenders!

  7. Nice job on the fenders Kipp.Makes it look even lower. Are you going to keep the horn grills or are you filling them up?

  8. Man, lowering the fenders is a bunch of work that a lot of people (most) will never even notice, but it's details like that that makes for a great custom. Sweet.

Love the lowering of the fenders. Are you keeping the headlights separate from the fender or are you going to lower them into the top of the fender?

  12. Thanks everyone for all the support.

Mats-henrik Thanks for the offer. I do have both emblems.

Kenneth I am thinking the horn grill's will stay but still not positive yet.

Big A thanks. there is a lot of subtle changes that only some will notice but that's the challenge.

Fryguy I will lower the stock headlights a little but keep them separate.

Nate Thanks. Having a hard time with restraint. Still a few more mods before prepping for paint.

i like the horn grills. they do a good job breaking up some space with narrow grille treatments. i think the shaved horn grills look best with lowered or chevy style headlights. either way you have a great eye, it'll be cool.

Thank you for documenting this and sharing it with us. Once it is in paint we can come back here and see the mods that achieved a unique but totally classic look. Your metal working skills and eye to detail are amazing. Sorry this was not meant to sound so sucky.

Looking great I need to get back on my 36 Roadster hope fully after the first of the year.

  21. Wow, you may not know shit about grammar or spelling, but you're a wizard with the welder! Like everyone else has said, good job!

One option on the horn grills is to use them to duct a little more air into the radiator.

I'll have to admit that in the past I haven't been a huge fan of chopped 35/36 Ford five windows but after seeing the job you did on this one I have changed my mind. Very nice work-the top has just the right flow...you nailed it. Keep up the good work!

  24. Thank a lot everyone for all the compliments. The suggestions are also very much appreciated they can help to look at thing a little differently. The front fenders are done and im working on a scoop under the front similar to the Calori coupe.I will post pics later today.

Kippers, I can't say enough about how great your metal skills and imagination are. The grill shell you created is a perfect example. The fact that you took upon yourself to construct a new bullnose to substitute for the crappy stock or the repop is another example. Your new one makes me inclined to ask you to make me one as well. That pot metal thing doesn't instill much structural confidence in me. I can just visualize the stocker snapping and my hood catching air and maybe flipping off or tearing something else up. Your grill bars make a strong visual style statement, "Westergard" on steroids, and brings to mind a 38 Buick front treatment scaled to the 36 Ford sized frontend. It appears that you have extended the "chin" below your grill bars as well to create a balanced "framing" of the grill bars. The result is just perfect.
When you mention a scoop under the front, will this be to add more airflow to the radiator?
I look forward to your postings to see what your fine taste will come up with next. Best Regards and good luck with all your endeavors. KB aka telekenfun

Kippers, Your extensions on the front are another daring mod on your part. looking at the before and after pics I never noticed that the stockers have a truncated look compared to your new ones. I don't think I would have extended them quite that much but now I'm going to have to take a serious look at mine when I get the body and fenders back on. In your case you've created a stronger horizontal line to the frontal view and a visual lowering without actually doing so. Great idea.
Are we seeing the finished ride height of car in these pictures or are you planning on establishing final ride height at a later time? I'ld like to see some side and 3/4 views of your front end now.
Best Regards and good luck with all your endeavors, KB aka telekenfun

  27. telekenfun she is close to final height motor and trans are in so major weight is in place. She may come down a little with more weight but not much. The fender in front of the rear wheel is a little over an inch lower than the bottom of the fender behind the front wheel so a little rear rake. I would like a little more but that would take major rework so that is where she will be. Yes the scoop will be to funnel more air to radiator. Hopefully she will get enough. I think she will but we wont know till spring. Thanks for the compliments. Later Kipp.

  28. Today I wanted to finish up the metal work on the front so after sanding the front fender's I made a scoop like the calori coupe to duct extra air into the radiator. I started by cutting and braking a piece of sheet to get the feel. Than I cut another piece and bent it around a pipe to get a rounded corner that was at a slight angle to make the front a little wider than the rear.

Then I cut a slit in the corners on the back and tacked/clamped a pipe to the lip.

Then I bent the lip around the pipe. Then I bent the sides the same way angled wider at the top.

Then I made a cardboard template for the back of the scoop to conform to the radiator. I then transferred the patern to a piece of sheet and tacked it to the back. Then I made tabs to weld to the frame to hold the scoop and a set to weld to the scoop to reinforce the mounting area. After I took a piece of 1/4" round bar and tacked it to the lip for reinforcement.

  29. I bent the round bar around the corner and up the side.

I added a couple pieces and then welded everything off. Now its ready to install.

I also repaired a couple tore and then poorly repaired spots on the fender's.

  30. I installed the scoop witch should work well.

I put the tires back on and put her on the ground. Then I put the bumper back on and stood back to look and it dident look right so I took it back off for good. After a little thought I think I have a solution but it will have to wait. But for now here's the finished frontend.
