Fender treatment looks so good Kippers!! Scoop looks a little on the large side but sure you can fettle it a bit :D

Kipp, It looks great, should help a lot in cooling the radiator. A flat black finish on it and it will disappear. On my car I'm trying to come up with a way to extract all the engine heat out through the inner fender louvers. It gets really hot in there. I'm using the horn grills for cold air intakes and my engine runs way better on ambient air!.
The bottom line of your frontend is really nice, it would be a shame to cover up that custom feature you've created. On mine I closed up the bracket notches for a smoother line and plan to not use bumpers. But I have considered a dropdown to hook under the front facia to mount some "nerf" bars made from cut down stock bumpers. The stock bumper has some style potential with that dropped center area that kinda matches our "chins". I hope you don't mind my giving you more to think about. Keep it up, you doing a wonderful job on her. Best regards and good luck with all your endeavors. KB aka telekenfun

  5. Thanks Kenneth. I have a type of nerf bar in mind. I hope they work. When I get them done everyone can let me know what they think.
Thanks COUPES. If you look at the coupe in Kenneth's avatar it has a similarly sized scoop but being black you don't even notice it under there. I think with maroon paint and a black scoop it will blend and not be seen.
    Thanks a lot Nate.
Thanks telekenfun. I think your right the scoop will disappear under the car with a little black. The nerf bars will also hide the horizontal line as well. All suggestions are welcomed. You never know wher your next good idea will come from.

    Vintage below the grille scoops.

The scoop on the Jack Calori Coupe (below) is hidden really well. Its hard to see on most photos. I had to lighten the photo a bit to make it stand out.

The scoop will be needed, as well as trying to get the hot air out of the engine compartment. I am sure it will look great and be pretty much "invisible" when the car is painted and done.

A late 40's kustom do however need bumpers. There are many nice ones to choose from, if the -37 Desoto looks weird now. Check out ones that follow the front profile or maybe shorten a -40 Lincoln to keep the shapes of the grille open.

  8. You beat me on that one J.B. That Lincoln bumper was exactly what come to my mind instead of nerf bars.No offense Kipp but I have to agree that an early kustom needs bumpers.

  9. Thanks for the pic's Rickster they are greatly appreciated.

  10. I will concur as well early customs have to have bumpers!

  11. Thanks J.B. and Kenneth. I agree about the bumpers. I never even considered not running bumpers until I put the front back on Monday and then it just looked out of place. I don't know why I just didnt love it. Not quite sure where to go for the first time on this build.

Hey Kipps, been following this thread since the start and have only just noticed I haven't posted on it.
Absolutely incredible work and even more incredible when you mention that you have no english wheel or planishing hammer to form the panels on.
I love the way the old 36 is turning out. Some very very nice touches here and a very good informative thread. Wish I had done more how too's in my zephyr build thread now.

Could you ask the photoshop guys to help out Kipps? Since i couldn't download pictures from my phone i messaged Rikster for duct ideas. Thankyou Rik!

  14. Thanks for the input. I have always thought that way as well just at a los at the moment. It will come to me I just have to look long enough.
Thanks Paul. I'v been watching your zephyr build (my next project is a 39 zephyr I have been collecting parts for) and the amount of rust repair you did is insane. She came out beautiful.
Thanks COUPES. Im happy with how the scoop came out. When I powder it black it will disappear what i'm having trouble with is a more elegant bumper. Does any one know what Calori ran on his? Havent been able to figure that out. Any help would be appreciated. Later Kipp.

I think Calori used '41 ford bumpers. Gotta give it to you, this is the best chop I've ever seen on a 35/36 five window. The front end turned out amazing also, can't wait to see more.

The Calori Ford uses a 1941 Ford bumper as Mats already mentioned.

    Also think about these.

    1940 Mercury, simple and elegant
1940 Pontiac, similar as the 1940 Lincoln unit. Possibly easier to find and cheaper.
1941 Oldsmobile, heavy and very Art Deco. Harry Westergard loved this one.
1940 Cadillac, also heavy, but Cadillac parts are always good to use.
1946 Ford bumper, heavy, but stylish and classic.

  17. Thanks Mats and Rikster. I had read that calori's bumpers were 41 and I thought not like any 41's that I have seen. After you guy's said 41 I looked more and found out that they are 41 ford super deluxe only. I have a line on a couple sets now.
Thanks tons. I don't think I would have looked any closer if you two hadent said 41's

Kipp, I know from your location and your posts that you go to Bonneville also. I also make the annual pilgrimage to Speedweek and crew on some of the teams. I am currently splitting my time between my 36 coupe paint-up and an XO class lakester rebuild. The reason I mention this is Bonneville has had to influence our thinking regarding aerodynamic consequences of all the bits and pieces of a car. I'm sure when you think about it, a front bumper will create a turbulence on it's back side right in front of your air scoop. This will result in a vacuum node instead of a pressure to the front of the air scoop thereby nullifying much of it's effectiveness. In my kind of thinking that form follows function, My mention of "nerf style" bumpers was to design some kind of split bumper that had minimal blocking of the radiator's air scoop and also compliment that great bottom curve of your frontend. Then again, it may be enough to simply insure that the grill and scoop crossectional area is equal to or slightly greater than the radiators crossectional area to adequately cool the engine without regard for any ram effect of the car in motion. Just something more to think about. All said, I really like everything you're doing. Best regards and good luck with all your endeavors, KB aka telekenfun.

  19. Hopefully I don't even need the scoop. With more efficient water pumps recored radiator and leaving the louvers on the hood im hoping the scoop is un needed. We will see soon enough. It is wonderful having Bonneville in my backyard like a whole other world.

  20. Spent a little time yesterday on trying to finish the right rear fender. After spending several hours tracking down a pair of 41 ford super deluxe bumpers and arranging a deal. I started to replace the inner lip at the back.

The rear inner lip had some pinholes and dident line up very well so I made a patch bolted it to the car then trimmed and tacked it to the fender.

Kipp, With your skills you could make a radiator shroud that would wholly appropriate to the build. That would insure air movement around all the tubes in the radiator. That is probably more important than the scoop when you're stopped in traffic on a 100 degree day or putting through the pits at Bonneville. Best Regards and good luck with all your endeavors, KB aka telekenfun.

Thanks for posting the fender fit stuff. Fighting with tying in the very rear of the tailpan patch, every pic helps

  24. Most likely I'll paint her. Between being to cheap and prefering to do everything I can myself I have painted all but one of my builds and the one that I dident took a year to get done. Came out perfect but took way to long.
A shroud will help greatly. I don't think I will have a heat problem( I hope ) my 34 had a rad half the size of my 36 and she ran a very healthy Chrysler Hemi and she ran cool so I think I should be ok. Only time will tell.
If you ever need any specific pic's let me know. The fender to tailpan fit is crap at best with non original fenders then add a aftermarket panel and the fit is less than perfect. Good luck on your fit.

  25. My 41 ford super deluxe bumpers showed up yesterday. Thanks secnwind. They are straight as an arrow will get them installed this weekend. Cant wait to get them installed.
