Technical 36 ford wish bone splitting question

    I am trying to build a 27T roadster using all 49 and earlier stuff. I want to keep this fairly simple that a farm kid in the 40s could have built it with reasonably available parts and decent skills. I want to lower the car without a drop axle. I am going to run a spring ahead set up on 36 Ford wishbones. In mock up with my 32 axle I switched the bones side to side and it looks that when I heat and turn the spring hangers back to perpendicular it works out just right to fit a stock A spring in there. Look at a stock spring ahead set up and imagine the hangers pointing in instead of out. There seems to be clearance for the shackle. The question: is there any reason that I can't do that? Thanks in advance for the advice.

    You will take some flack for wanting spring ahead, but that was what was done a lot in the day for getting a rod lower and getting hyd brakes. It sure is traditional. I love the look, as it is hardcore old school east coast.

    Two ways to split;

    One is like you say; heat/bend up front.

    Other way is like on my 1959 built rod; that one has the front hangers and yokes as stock, not bent. What they did was make hairpins instead of using the bone tubing. They welded the hairpins to those cut off yokes and the weld joint is on an angle.

    I will find a pic in a few minutes..

    here is my 1959 built car.

    You can see the angled splice. You can do the same angle splice with your bones, or do the heat/bend up front.

    Mine is a 37-41 axle that has a wider perch distance/wider spring, that was also a Mordrop axle and drilled, which is a bit unusual for a east coast build. Most were not dropped axles, most not chromed either

    All of this is going to be mounted to an A frame using a 37 rear end with the bells flipped to spring ahead using a T spring. 40 Ford backing plates with 37 wide fives all around. Should end up in the neighborhood of 107 1/2" wheel base to fit in the 46 flathead and trans. Yes keeping the torquetube albeit shortened. I will start a build thread once all the parts are chased down and the build begins.

    wide fives were popular with old east coast, as a 39 ford was typically used as a parts car for F&R axles with hyd brakes, and the pedal cluster/master, as well as the motor/trans.

    Thanks for the pics F&J. I am going the heat and bend route as I like the look of the bones better than hairpins, at least for this project.

    The bones are traditional, and those hairpins are not a normal thing to see on a spring ahead. I can't recall seeing another one like mine.

    Now back to the question. Is there any reason that I cannot flip the bones R for L and have the spring hangers point inward to use a stock length Model a spring? With reversed eyes if there is clearance.

    I have done exactly this on my project,I swapped sides of the split bones & used an English Ford anglia front spring as thats what Had available.This spring had 1-3/4" wide leaf pack so I ground the shackel eye of the bone to this width & made shackel bushes to suit.Though I haven't got this fenderless pickup project driveable yet it seems to have worked out ok.I suppose living in New Zealand these old english bits are a bit more available to us than you guys.Can't see why you can't do he same with the A spring
