I am going to start getting my front axle whipped into shape. I am starting with a clean, complete, original 36 axle ( the flash made the it look like a crusty pile which it's not) aside from the obvious spindle swap and splitting the bones I have questions about the spring and perches. I want to hang the spring from perches above the axle. Do I use A perches? Can I buy them new? Secondly I am going to run a suicide set up and don't know what type of spring to use. I looked at the posies site and don't mind buying a nice spring but which one. I don't want the spring to be to tall or to flat, basically just look like the opposite curve of the axle. What did you do? Once again I don't mind buying new perches, shackles and a spring. I just don't know what to buy...
What I want to accomplish. I stole the photo from Dirty Dugs post because it's perfect. He seems to be an expert and vetran of suicide style front ends.
speedway should have everything you need this is what I am using on my Model A tudor as well. New perches come with the 1 3/4" shakles and they have a nice posies reversed eye and de arched spring which will lower the front end approx. 2".
Lastly. What I'm up to. I started with a complete set of 39 axles but recently accuired a nice set of 36 axles which I much prefer. I felt bad about chopping them up and tried to sell them on ebay but knowone seemed to want them so it's gonna be hack saw city soon. After I get the front sorted out I will take the 36 rear and a 46 open rear and make one...
Thanks for the complement but I'm not doing anything new, just copying others. The front spring on the jughead is a Mr. Roadster from Speedway. Part number is 910-33030, 31-1/4" eye to eye. If you want it real flat try flipping over the main leaf on a stock spring. It'll end up with no suspension but, man is it flat. Good luck, dug
The Mr. Roadster spring came with 6 leafs. Seams OK just like it is. Could maybe take one or two off the top.
Clamp 'um together. Take the top one or two off, put the bolt back in, take the clamps off, stand back and say,"COOL"
And remember to make a block with the hole in it the thickness of the 2 springs to put back on with that bolt if you want to use the stock U-Bolts and crossmember. Put the block under the springs for extra lowering. Won't matter in your suicide setup, but others reading this using the stock crossmember will need to do it.
Perches are available from Dick Spadaro,Bob Drake,Deuce Factory,Pete & Jake, etc. Center to center on the perch eyes determines the center to center on the spring you need. They show how to figure this on the Posies site. Everyone runs reversed eyes, then it's a matter of deciding which arch to run.Stock,1" lower,2" lower. I'd get the 2" lower reversed eye. The Durant Monoleaf looks too flat.
Thanks for all of the info. I can't wait to start putting this together as soon as Xmas is completed... Just painted the shop and got the furnace working (Thanks Dave) I have TONS of room in the fixed up shop to spread my junk all around...
choprods - I remember that perch....scarliner's T? And now to hijack this post.....did you ever shorten that torque tube and have you done the driveshaft yet? Just wondering how it turned out.
Just ordered all of the parts from the local(tm) "street rod" shop. Prices as follow $105cdn for the spring, $34/shackles and $79 for the perches. I looked at the speedway site and it's just a little less expensive to have the local guys order the parts than do it myself... Once again thanks for the info...
Grim you musta imagined that torque tube deal in a dream or somethin- I wasn't plannin on doin one......
