I have a '36 Ford Sedan that has a "vinyl" roof insert that looks different from the new ones advertised. It is almost at the same level as the metal part of the roof with a hard rubber edge. Has anyone seen one of these? Seems like the new vinyl inserts sit higher than this. Somebody sealed this up with a silver coat of something. Nothing like having to re paint just to have a new cover. Any info appreciated
Looks a little bulky. I've done several with metal inserts screwed to the wood and covered with Hartz cloth. Smooth and flush with the top.
As originally built the insert was flush with the roof and had a narrow bead or molding around the edge. Vintage Ford specialists sell a kit of materials to replace this insert.
That is what it looks like to me. Should be able to remove the silver sealer without damaging the paint if you are careful. Once you remove the old top try different solvents on the top or chunks that flake off and see what works best.
You lost me with the screw inserts. It sounds like a good plan, but I wouldn't know where to start. I have to look up Hartz cloth---is it waterproof?
It could be RV coating. It's tough. I am going to tape off the area where the overlap sealer is on the painted roof, so if I have to repaint, it won't be so much.
I couldn't find Vintage Ford Spec. Any ideas? I am sure that I will need the outside ring and other little parts once I get it off, Thanks
If you plan to repaint the area where the sealer is on the metal regardless. Tape it off like you plan and then try a citrus paint remover and aircraft paint stripper. Both can take layers off if applied and managed properly. I personally prefer the aircraft paint remover. I have removed paint from cars with it leaving the original paint intact. Could save you a lot of work.
