The tires on my '36 Ford are 6.00x16. Does that mean the width of my wheels are 4" or 5" or ??
    Thanks

Your tire size doesn't mean anything re: your wheel width.

The '36 wheel is 4" wide though.

Standard issue was 600 on 4" wheels. 60 HP cars had 3 1/2" wheels and 550 tires. Special order, pickups, and '39 mercury (first year ) came with 4 1/2" wheels and 650 tires. I used 700 tires on back, Firestone specification is 5-6" width for them, so I had to get a pair widened. Personal hubcap taste '39's are best looking

FWIW, there was no 60hp offered in '36 and a '39 Mercury wasn't available in '36 either.

I would not be too sure about the wide fives on the '39 Merc being wider than 4". Wider fives are 3/4 ton or commercial ch***is and look quite different. Even the Zephyr is only 4" until they went to 15"s. Merc did have some real nice 5"X16"s in '42. Good luck finding them too. Fred A

When you are looking at them in a pile only difference is width in my experience. Done it enough so I could spot the rare 3 1/2 incher, otherwise they interchange cap & all. "Spare parts" yard where I bought my Model A frame and a couple of wide 5's had a '39 merc coupe. He told me it had 4 1/2" wheels and that's why they were gone, and I wouldn't have wanted to pay the price for them anyway. He had been in the cl***ic car parts for decades so I believed him. Gladly gave him $40 for the chery 4 inchers and sent them away to be made into 6inchers.
Yes, 1 ton wheels were a bunch different, 7" bolt pattern split rim. I was referring to the 99 C series with the artillery type & not the D series:
