The key to these working well is keeping them lubricated. JW

Thank you very much for the pics that's great and looks better than my mind pictured it. I have the t bar bit just missing the loop that bolts to the inner fender.

I have found a few different headlights I may be able to use both with and without bezels just a matter of trying them out

MERRY CHRISTMAS hope you have a good one

Thanks Luke, I have a spare loop I can take measurement off so you can replicate one.
Merry Christmas To you and the other Willys owners. JW

Can anyone show me what the stock internal mirror should be like please. If you have a ford you google it and bam its there but with willys there is such little info out there

Also does anyone have any pics and dimensions of a stock truck bench seat please or has anyone used a seat intended for use in something else

27t that's great when ever you have time I'm not in a m***ive rush just gathering parts and information at the moment before I get stuck in
    Cheers

Hi Luke, I'm restoring an original 38 Willys Pickup. I got a hood latch hoop this summer from Ron Ladly in se Pa. ( The Willys guy, he still has many original and replacement parts for Willys) I also bought a rough pickup wooden seat base from him. I used it as a pattern and built a new Ash wooden seat base, had the seat rebuilt and turned out nice.

G Willys could you perhaps show some dimensions of the Rectangular Mirror Gl*** Area ?

  15. 1940 Willys...picture coming, but the measurements are 5" long, by 2-1/2" wide. I had one in my '38 stocker many years ago...after driving it for a couple hundred miles, I had a longer one cut (I think 6-1/2"...been a while, I sold that car in the early 2000's.) g-willys .... I put the glue on the windshield type now...no one even notices...but I can see much better, especially in my split rear window coupe. g-willys

Yes the original seat base is wooden with a plywood cover that has the bottom seat springs attached to it. the back seat cushion fastens to the wooden base frame and at the top has tabs that latch in the the rear cab inner brace below the rear window

  18. My '38 sedan front seat had adjusters under the wooden piece that the seat spring was attached to.
You could slide it (the wooden piece, and seat springs) forward and then backward, but not really very far in either direction.
My Pickup on the other hand had only 3 mounting holes for the seat (apparantly) for short legs, medium and long legs...BUT there wasn't much difference between all three. And finally, you then bolted it down in one of those three threaded mounting holes. If you were long legged, driving a willys pickup was not very comfortable.

I have seen Rons name pop up a few times but have been unable to find a way of contacting him. Being in the uk makes it difficult to buy parts from people who have no web page or email which is frustrating as I have to rely on agents or a seller that is willing to ship
Add some pics of your 38 would be nice to see. I'm aiming for a stockish look whilst being low and v8 although I'm not sure which way I'm going motor wise yet

G-willys thanks for all your knowledge and pics just wondering on the lenth of the stem for the mirror? I've found a similar mirror although not exact it's pretty close which is good enough for me but can't find anything close to the mounting stem so I will make 1 up

  20. Luke,
You've got lots of options...a V-6 works well, and gives you a bit more room...there will not be a lot of radiator room with a v-8. I had a Buick v-6 in my pickup, and a fellow I know that just got a '38 pickup running has a chev. v-6 in his. If you want to stay with a v-8...plan for as tall a radiator as will fit, and it has to be about 16-17 inches in width to fit the front sheetmetal. (40-41 sheet metal is easier to fit a cross flow radiator...37-8-9, usually needs an upright radiator) The stud for a mirror screws into a threaded nut that is part of the half round piece where the wipers are and where the headliner fastens to. The studs I found in my cabinet have been cut on the threaded areas so each is a different length ...the longest one is about 2 inches long...the nut is 5/16, and the threaded part is 5/16 co**** thread. Let me know if I can provide any other help.

G-willys thanks for your help again
I think I will be going sbc as easily available and plenty of options to upgrade. I've found a Lucas mirror that it easily available and similar to the willys 1 so will probably go with 1 of those.
I'm looking into front suspension now as that's the first bit of the build I would like to keep my original willys axle but not sure I can get it low enough for what I want on parallel leafs. Ifs seams to be the best route but would like it be more traditional. Has anyone managed to get the front reasonably low without going the ifs route?
    Cheers

There is a build here by trailer-ed who used a transverse spring and drop axle, it sits pretty low but looks like the engine has to sit way back to clear the crossmember. Hotrodtodd1960 also has pics of the car here on the forum too.
Im facing this same dilemma, I thought about a dropped tube axle with parallel leafs, but i picked up an ifs setup in case i cant get it as low as i like.
Another thought i had and im not sure how feasible is to use a dropped ‘40 ford transverse spring and axle, since the spring is ahead of the axle centerline, the cross member would be forward a little more than a spring-over transverse setup.

Thanks I'll have a look around see what I can find. Thing for me is over here we have a 8 point rule to keep our historic registration. A complete stock vehicle has 14 points and you need to keep a minimum of 8 otherwise we have to take a test which is possible to get through but we have to add a lot of things modern cars have which will make it more difficult to get the look I'm after and make the truck more street rod

Just found the pics and your right it does require the engine to sit back along way not really an option for a pickup as there would be no room left in the cab. I may play around with reversing the eyes on a set of leafs and see where that sits but think ifs is the only real option to get low

I feel my stock 37 sits very low and is running 600x i6 tires, im sure your front tires would be lower that that. I will get onto that latch hoop this week. JW

There's a pic on the 1st page brown sedan. I need to find some stock front springs and reverse the eyes and see where it sits from there ideally I don't want ifs but I do want it low as low as possible really

No not really any progress here from me been waiting on results of new laws regarding altered vehicles

Can anyone tell me where I can get 39 onwards shackles and original style bolts and bushes for my original leaf springs please mines on a 39 on frame and can only find the 37/38 and jeep style ones. It's looking as if I may have to make the best of running the original parallel leafs to keep mine within our registration laws

    Thanks
    Luke
