I know it's been covered but I couldn't find a definite answer. I am about to rebuild my 37 Pickup Banjo but was confused about what gears to go with. I know the stock gears are 4:11, when I bought the rear end I got 3:63 gears with it, off of what I believe was a 41 Ford but I've heard 3:54 gears are better with the setup I'm going with, 350/350 with 16x750 firestones rears. I also have a '42 banjo open drive with 3:78 gears. I guess my question is would the 3:63 gears be fine or should I go with 3:54 gears? or rebuild the 42 Banjo? thx in advance.
yes, is that not a good combo? sorry should of mentioned im new to early fords. I do have a complete rebuild Monarch rear end.
Since you are using other modern parts, I don’t understand why you’d go to the big expense to rebuild a vintage part that will never be seen. Just use a 9” Ford and be done with it for less than half the price. If you were building a highboy roadster that shows the rear I might think differently. But nobody is gonna stick their head under the bed of a 37 truck to check out the rear axle.
ok I get that cost diffrence and i appreciate the response but my question is would that rear end gearing work with that combo.
I guess it depends what RPM your 350 likes. My flathead powered 32 with 3.78 rear gears and similar rear tires cruises down the interstate at a plenty-fast clip at 2600 RPM.
If you use the early Ford rearend and get on the engine hard some day good chance of needing a new rearend.
Never heard of 363 gears for a Ford. 378, and 411 are the common ones, with 354 bing the other option. Irrelevant, but if you like the banjo I would go with 354's with the modern motor. Otherwise, modern rear end makes sense too
yea, I did a search because it seemed like an odd gear but turns out it was used on 1941 Ford's. thanks for the reply.
