I’m working in a 38 Ford 1 1/2 ton stake bed. Wanting to do some conversions to make it safer to drive around locally. To pick up a bit more speed I know one of the things would be to get a rear end that is geared higher. Can I get a gear set to swap out the originals with? If so any suggestions or advice would be appreciated.

  3. Those trucks either have the standard Timken single speed or Eaton 2 speed full floating rear axle. The smaller gear sets from the cars and light trucks will not fit. You can call around to driveline shops that serve large commercial vehicles but don’t get your hopes up that they will know much about really old axles. A big truck like that with cable operated drum brakes would likely be plenty safe at lower speed driving as is.
