I have been working on this 65 newport for a while now. There is smoke coming from near the manifolds on each side. I thought it was gaskets and changed those over. Everything is secure and it doesnt smell like burning oil. It is billowing from under the manifolds. Any ideas??

probably blow by coming out from around your valve cover gaskets. How many miles are on the motor? You might want to consider a new set of valve covers with a PCV setup an a breather to reduce pressure in your crankcase

it has sat for a few months while i had the carb rebuilt and everything else. I'll change out the valve cover gaskets.
    Thanks

Have you had the exhaust manifolds off? The exhaust studs go into the water jacket in the heads, maybe coolant is leaking out the studs on to your exhaust.

How long did it do this for? I don't think I have ever pulled anything apart and put it back together without a little oil hitting something that's going to get hot and burning off... same with water. Was it running for more than a few minutes?

Otherwise, I'm prone to think it's building crankcase pressure and finding the weakest link: vc gaskets.

Can you describe more specifically where it's coming from?

Pressure test cooling system, like 4tford said first and last exh.manifold studs both sides go into coolant passages.
