Projects 383 . whats it worth?

    I came across a older gentleman who is a huge Mopar fan. Sad to say He feels its time to clean out the machine shed .
    In the corner is a complete Dodge 383 from a 1969 Super Bee. With an auto trany.
    I have no clue what shape its in. Anyone help on a price I should start to offer? Also Has a 42' and 50' Dodge pickup to be sold.

    Well, there were over 3 million of them made, so it's not like they're rare...if it's complete and running i'd start at $300 depending on condition...

    If it's not running $300 wouldn't be a bad price for a core engine and 727 trans. Between friends maybe a little less though.

    If it's out of a 68 Super Bee should have HP stamped on the id pad makes it a little more desirable to someone restoring a 68 Roadrunner or Super Bee.

    If it is indeed complete, as you say...carb, intake, air cleaner, exhaust, dizzy...then, IMHO, a grand would not be out of line for the pair.
    I'm sure someone will disagree:cool:

    Thanks for the info. The 383 is complete . Top to bottom. Also has a few 318's and a 360 something??? Also spotted a six pack front clip on the upper landing.
    Heading back next week to deal and get some pics.
     
  7. mopar 383 is a GREAT engine! not rare as said before, but a great engine none the less, also remember that 361-383-400's are short deck big blocks, so intakes won't fit from 413-426-440's so make sure things fit before ya buy em..

    better heads on the late 60s but the less desirable crank. i probably wouldnt go a grand for it unless you know its a runner and you got somethin to drop it in. lots of hop up stuff though. the b and rb motors have become my engine of choice over the years. gotta like em. dizzy up front, dry intake and external oil pump.
     
  10. if it is from a 69 bee it should have HP exhaust manifolds , and a windage tray above the oil pan with 402 pressed into the pan and if it has the stock intake it should have 4 holes for the carb plates not an open square and a thin harmonic balancer if it has all of that 300 is an ok deal not a steel but not outragous especailly if it has the 727 with it

    if its just a normal non HP 383 300 is too much

    Is there a Chrysler 431 cu wedge motor??? I was reading an article in a HOT ROD Deluxe Jan 2011 edition. And it mentioned a 431 motor that came out in '59... Or was it just a typo??? It's a 300E motor with a 2x4 intake setup....
     
  12. yes there is a 413 wedge listen to "shutdown" buy the beachboys "his dual carbs arestartin to drink but the 413's lead is startin to shrink" the 413 was built from 59 -66 the 440 took over in 67

    they were the oringinl superstock and max wedges in 62

    That 69 383 with the torqueflite behind it is a good runner in the right body. I'd think 3 to 500 would be more in the ball park for an unknown quantity though. Maybe a Mopar fanatic would give 1000 if it had all the right trinkets with it but to anyone just wanting a good strong engine it's still just a used 383 and automatic.
    I street raced against a lot of 383 Roadrunners back in the day and could almost always beat a four speed car but the automatics almost always took me by two car lengths and beat the four speed cars by three or four lengths.

    Man, I've got to start selling you guys engines! I've bought 2 complete early hemis for $100.00 (that's one hundred dollars) in recent years. I might give $200 for a complete, running, non-smoking 383, but that's about it.
    After years of getting burned, I won't pay more than scrap price for anything I buy used anymore.
     
  18. actually you can make some goofy cubes by switching b and rb cranks around. also look for a 413 industrial motor for the crank and rods, the 72 industrial crank i have is a really nice forged crank, and they are supposed to have 6 pack rods, I have never confirmed that though, and if ya do stumble on a 413 industrial, throw the heads in the trash... there useless...

    O/T but..69 Super Bee 383 4 spd was the only new vehicle I ever owned. I believe the Super B was a mid 68 model introduction...besides what's mentioned above,the hi po 383 was advertised as having 440 heads and a hotter cam than the regular 4 bbl 383.The HP rating was 335 vs 330 for the regular 383 4bbl.Actual HP as they rate it today would be about 280 hp.
    Late 50's 383's were raised block?

    383s are low decks. 413, 426, 440 are the RBs. the heads are taller which makes the intake manifolds wider.its a little more than an inch wider if memory serves me
     

  21. 69 383s 440 have #906 heads on them from the factory the heads are the same the block deck height is where the size difference comes in the 440 block is right around 2inches wider then a 383 between the heads

    in 58 the 383 was a raised block only year for a rb383
