39-41 backing plate question

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Jalopy Kid, Mar 16, 2010.

  1. So as I'm ***embling the 39 brakes for my AV8 ch***is I just now noticed two of the adjusters are missing on one of my backing plates.
I have a set of later (46-48 style) backing plates that have good adjusters, which brings me to my question, can these be removed? If so, whats the trick?

The 39 backing plates with no adjusters.

If you're talking about the empty holes in the first picture, those adjusters are available from Mac's Antique Auto Parts. If you're talking about something else, I can't help

  3. Yes the two holes in the top corners of the backing plate (not the two holes at the bottom of the backing plate)
There should be a bolt head with a spring there that turns a camshaft on the the inside of the backing plate to push the shows out.

  4. You should be able to remove them by grinding the "peen" off the shaft where the adjuster is attached. I would reattach them with TIG weld. I don't know how much tension the springs are under but be careful.

  5. Oh man your a genius! I have no idea why I didnt think of that!
Maybe cause I've been working on this car day and night almost for two weeks now (with the exception of food and sleep of course). Trying to get it finished for Thursday!
