i have what i know believe to be a set of 39 chevy truck. the current sealed beam bulbs are 4030 6 volt. i need to convert to 12v but all of the headlights i can find have these 3 bosses on the fronts, i guess for setting them? the inner ring that holds the light in wont fit. anyway, does someone have an idea of bulbs w/ no bosses?

my buddy actually ground off those bumps to make em work.

  3. Bob Drake sells 12 volt headlights without those three bumps...they are $25 each! FYI, they are for aligning

as Rusty1 said , you can chip most of them off with a snipper , then grind them smooth...use some water to keep them cool. and use eye protection

Early sealed beams did not have the 3 ***s for headlamp alignment machines to seat on. I don't know when the change was made but I have had many NOS headlamp ***emblies from 40-42 and none had the alignment ***s on the bulbs.
Sealed beams headlamp bulbs became mandatory by law for all vehicles made in the US from 1940 up. The law was later amended to include all vehicles manufactured for sale in the US.
I don't know of any US made car prior to 1940 that used sealed beam headlamp bulbs.

  5. about 10 years ago when i was doing a 350/350 in a `40 and converting to 12 volt i found out my Local Napa store had some headlights without the ***s...i bought 3 pairs, and have one pair left for my own use. they must have been some older stock because i have never been able to find anymore at any parts store

i thought about grinding off, but i was worried they would break. that would be easy if it works

I have ground them off before. It's better to do it in stages rather than trying to grind the whole thing down at once. Do a littl;e on one, move to the next and so on.
