hey! after too many interuptions in life i'm ready to get back after my c.o.e. project. this is the second c.o. build as i sold the last one to help with the kids schooling. i'm not a computer guy but with some help will try to keep up on this build thread. lets start with the history of this truck. back in 1967 a fellow 20min down the road went to the neighbours auction as they were selling out and had sold their land. at this auction he paid 8 dollars for this 39 and drove it home. he used it on the farm to help his dad and uncle with harvest, his uncle removed the grill so that if he ran into anything he wouldn't wreck it as well as the drivers door so he could stand on the fender to take the grain from the combine on the move. flash forward 36 years. a few yo yo's from the local car club kept bugging me that they knew where there was a cabover like my last one,the only thing missing from there bs was the grade school banter. anyhow one day i had just told one of these goofs to **** off and was overheard by another guy from their club and after telling him how much these goofs pissed me off told me it was his neighbour down the road from his farm and that he had grown up with this guy and gave me his phone number. i made arrangments to go see the truck and was able to make a good deal. the grill was hanging in the barn as was the door. the previous owners family called this truck beverly as they knew a lady named beverly that was as ugly as this truck. i don't have any pictures of when i bought her or how hard she was hit in the p***enger front but you could put your head betweenthe grill and the opening. the following pics are from where i left off. i have her mounted(sounds dirty)on a 72 chev 1/2 ton frame with a rebuilt disc brake front end and parallel spring rear with 3:73-1 posi diff, this has all been sandblasted and painted 4yrs ago. so some pics of where i'm at.
Hey Pex,looking forward to watching your build, would imagine there are some "puter" savy folks here that can help with pictures "cause we like pictures" ha.Maybe following you I can get motivated out in my shop
i asked my friend to post some pics and we had a failure to communicate.he put them in the 'can we start a c.o.e. post he or i will move them maybe.
having built a cabover before as well as a handfull or six of other cars and trucks i really enjoy playing out in the shop. i am very fortunate to have a good workspace with enough room as well as lots of tools i've collected over the years. cabovers are my favorites and this one is going to be a keeper. the next thing i need to do to this one is to finish the bodywork and get it into a expoxy primer,i'm guessing about 30-40hrs to do this, i will post some pics. i have a low mile 350 vortec and 700r4 trans which is going to be mounted behind the cab with the rad in the original location. i'm going to run 2in exhaust pipe with belled ends to carry the coolant back and forth. i ran a big block chev in my last one but due to the cost of fuel i'll use the smallblock i have. the last c.o. was built on a p-van frame with duel rear wheels but was eventually was made into a 1/2 ton by changing out the front a-frames and rear axle. this truck i want to ride like a car so thats the reason with starting with a 1/2 tonframe. so rather than just tell what i'm going to do i'll show you. thanks GREG
whoops-so being a comtard i do give myself a pat on the back for posting some pictures, only they should have been here not bumping people off the banner.sorry
Cool story. Nice you ar building A second COE. Hope you get some pic's to this thread to. Have fun Building.
well i've been working on the c.o.e. and have gotten alot done. i moved the upper inside firewall panel up so i can cut down on the windnoise. i also finished the firewall as well as the floor. i uses 10gauge steel for the floor. i'm going to try to finish the bodywork and shoot some DP90 on everything by the end of the week. i've been taking pics and will post these sometime soon. so when i install the engine and trans behind the cab does this make it a c.i.e ? lol
while i guessed about 40 or so hrs to get it to an etch primer i'm about 73 hrs and have a ways to go. put the bear claw latch in the drivers side door and spent a wack of time lining up the gaps. i have it poping open when you pull the lever. also picked up the material for the front window opening and the gl*** as well as the window channel.will try to remember to get a tube of butyl tomorrow. i'll see where i get over the weekend and flickr some pics sunday pm.
yea i lied about the pictures, we live in the country and our pump down the water well took a **** and threw a curve into my weekend plans. i did manage to get the steering box hooked up to the drag link and the drivers inner fender trimed and installed. the well adventure kicked the **** out of my wallet but a parts order is needed.i'm not going to cheap out on the sound deadener(dynamat or equivalent) as i plan on keeping this truck and the older i get the more comfort is better as i drive my stuff. i'm going to have this truck on the salt come august to take in speedweek for the first time.hopefully! i'll try to catch up on the pictures this week.
we've jumped head first into our first cold snap of winter so i've been dealing with snow etc. glad my snow shovel says case on the side of it. worked on the winshield opening today. i'm going to v-**** the two pieces so i removed the center bar and started to reinstall the interior tins after filling holes and smoothing out the bumps. should get this done tomorrow and take some pics.
thanks dezel- good therapy working on a project. it seems the older i get the deeper the pile of ****.(family ) anyhow. you have a good start on your cabover. my previous cabover now has a 6cyl ***mings deisel in it, the guy pulls a fifth wheel and wanted better mileage than the bbc i had in it. i looked at your posts on your truck and don't have any suggestions on steering being your going with a tilt cab. how long of a box is that and is your truck on a s-10 frame. greg
i here ya. i have a hell of a time anymore keep n the gl*** half full outlook. thank goodness the partner is around to put things in focus. i cut the bed down to 8ft. in length and 55" in width to match the wheel base and width of cab. sure made adding to the fender width to match front fenders a pain but hopefully it will look right in the end. yes i used a s10 frame (just because i had one) but would have been easier to have built a tube. lesson learned. i dont know for sure but have an ideal for the steering box and tilt shaft. i really need to get this done, i have other projects stack n up..
well it's out to the shop to throw some mud. i like to use the short hair fibregl*** for a base coat on the welded patches and then a lightweight topping. i spent last night fitting the hood(grill surround) and installing a bear claw latch for the hood. i'll post pictures sunday or monday.
getting down to the short strokes on the bodywork. i'm planing on priming at the end of the week. we all know how plans go. at about 116 hrs on the bodywork. we are expecting a warm up in our weather so i'm waiting for that to spray the etch and high build because i need the fresh air to replace the air that the fans take away. i'll post again when i have some new pics.
I've gotten quite abit done -bear claws on doors and hood done -bodywork on fenders done -inside bodywork done -headlights sanded -stainless for grill preped and straightened -sanded-sanded-sanded
i'm still at it and with the improved weather should be in primer before the weekend. i've got two other projects on the go and throw in that job thing and..........................................................pictures when i get it one shade of primer.
thanks donn-i just fake the skill part.LOL when i was a youth my dad had a body shop and a auto wreckers so i did learn the odd thing out of necessity. i hate the sanding part but i'm at the point where things start to happen faster.
