I need to get at the light switch on a 39 Ford banjo steering wheel. What's the trick? I can't work out how the horn ****on comes out. I have tried holding it in and turning it but that isn't happening.Someone must have pulled one of these apart. Thanks.
There is a wire bale that holds the light switch and wiring harness on at the bottom of the steering box. Flip it off and remove the wiring thing. There is a little forked thing on the end of the horn rod and a spring. Push the forked thing up and remove a little horse shoe clip. The horn ****on and rod will come out now.
Under that horn buton is a rod running all the way down the column to the switch which is actually down at the steering box. You'll have to unhook the rod down at the steering box. JH
OK, so Andy types faster but I'm bringing visual aids..... Check this: http://www.vanpeltsales.com/FH_web/FH_images/FH_steeringear-pics/Flathead_SteeringGear_1937-39.jpg The pieces Andy are talking about are part #'s 3642, 3643, 3644. The cover for all this is the contraption shown on the end of the steering box. JH
You may or may not be able to completely extract the horn rod depending on the exact model of car - I know the pickups at least have a heck of a time w/o dropping the steering box!
Another tip. Be extremely careful not to bend the rod. If it is not going to slide out, follow Flat Ernies' advice and drop the box.
Once you unhook the rod it will pull up, it is very long and will hir the headliner before it comes free, you may need to drop the column,be carefull.
