Does anyone know if any of the later model (40-47) horn ****ons interchange or fit on a 39 Ford banjo steering wheel? Thanks, Phil
No not newer than 39 but older than 39 will work. Too small to cover the hole. This horn ****on, used with a 39 banjo, is a 36. It is actually the headlight switch with a smaller horn ****on in the middle. It has a long rod that goes all the way through the steering box into the HL switch at the base og the column. AFAIK it is not reproduced so you will need an original. If you don't need the HL switch you might be able to find a damaged original much cheaper just to cover the hole but it is very difficult to make the original early Ford horn ****on work as a horn ****on. Doable but not easy. Don't let the horn ring fool you. It was an accessory for a 36 Ford. I adapted it to work in a 32 column with the 39 banjo. It's a one of a kind. (it does operate the head light switch.)
I used a late model GM tilt column in my '39 Plym.. The DeLuxe '39 Plym's had banjo steering wheels, which differ considerably from the Fords.. More like a Buick and/or other GM car of the 30's.. Several after market manufactures make the '39 Ford style of banjo, they dip in the middle in lieu of being flatter like the '36 banjo's.. The only horn ****on center I could find for a banjo type wheel was the Ford V8 and/or plain.. I was able to get the last brown leather Carrera Cl***ic banjo for my Plym.. I ordered it with a plain horn ****on... I looked and looked for a Plym horn ****on, they all had the Plym sailing ship on the ****on.. I finally found the ****on for a standard steering wheel, the ****on was smaller. Very little modifications were required to fit the Plym cap over the plain Carrera horn ****on, attaching same with "GOOP"... There are very few things in this world that come easy and/or are impossible, "somethings just take longer and cost more"..
These have been a much needed aftermarket item. JohnnyA http://www.ebay.com/itm/Horn-****on...Parts_Accessories&hash=item5d33c155c4&vxp=mtr
