Hoping someone can help, getting a little tired of the temperamental stock g/box in my 33 tub, i have a 39 box sitting the floor, other than the rear mount what if any other mods are needed. thanks, thommo.
thommo, Check the clutch throw out arm. The Green Bible shows 40 7511-B for 1933 and 91A 7511 for the 85 HP 1939 which says you will probably have a problem. Charlie Stephens
Yep the clutch shaft dia. Is the same right through. I can't think of any real problems Thommo. Do it!
gear lever hole in floor is a little further foward so floor mat has to be cut plus those early boxes with straight cut low go back to low at 40 mph much easier lol what motor has that great old tub of yours got in it ?
I pretty sure the arms will swap but I am not that familiar with either year. Check the part number on the lever attached to the '39 box to see if someone had done it already. The shift lever will probably hit the dash. You may have to cut to length, rethread for the gearshift ball and bend cold to the right shape (it is easy I did it on my '32 with a '39 box). I used te picture in the owners manual to bend mine to the original shape since it goes better with the motif of my car. Charlie Stephens
or ....ya do what i did an put the lrger shift forks from the later top into the early top an leave the floor ect alone i did this on ny 33 an 32
You will have to fabricate a way to mount your parking brake mechanism--'36 was the last year for parking brake lever in the floor. Unless you use the early style top, in which case it won't be a problem.
Just a quick update, 39 gearbox is in,had to come out twice, you have basically got to change the front of the 39 box into a 33/34 box, swap the clutch arm, clutch fork and front bearing retainer to get correct thrust bearing throwout. While i was in the mood, of came the single barrel manifold and horrid detroit lubricator carb and on went a 34 intake and 97 carb. Really a different car now, smooth shifting and more power. thommo.
