Measure opening in your forward fork...you need the one that is just a hair over 3"across. If you have it, you are on your way.

hey bruce, i read the thread you linked to. it seams to me the more cost affective way to go is buy another trans with atleast a good gear set, then buy the bits you need to finish the rebuild? i say that becouse on joblot it looks like it would cost about $600 to buy EVERYTHING internal new.

Here's another source for parts and information. Mac has written a book on rebuilding flathead transmissions (if you need it), has many of the parts you need and is very generous with advice. Joblot works for me, too ... as does anything Bruce posts.

here's a few pics of the car. the trans has what looks like...... *18<->858417* stamped on top where the inspection plate should be....... /what looks like.... A8-7006-D on the bottom rear/ and on the shifter housing.... "28" on top then.... 81A-7222B below it.

    Well.

I hope you know exactly what you have.

You did not mention it's a V8-60 ... and I trust this has nothing to do with April Fools.

That is a pretty hard to find gear case with some outstanding speed equipment on that engine.

Everything still applies as far as rebuilding the transmission since it uses the 85hp gears ... just understand that that case is pretty unique even to the V8-60.

(I checked that toploaderheaven site, Magnus. Good site but for much newer transmissions.)

Isn't it just the exact same trans as an 85 horse, except you need to grind the starter notch a little differently?

I can't agree with Bruce enough. A good clean side shift box can be had for $50. Price all those gears and other stuff seperately (like you did), it adds up real quick.

I would also advise cleaning out & blasting that box before you put any money into it. That is some pretty heavy rust scale in there.

Good luck & keep us posted on your progress. Love that little 60.

There's been several threads on this in the past few days. The V8-60 big gear case with the 85hp gears has more than just a bigger starter notch. It has a cover for the drive cast into it. You can cut out the bell but then you need to fab a cover.

Most likely the engine is a 37-39 truck which came with the big transmission.

I'd do everything I could to make that case usable.

thanks for the input guys. ya jax i knew what it was. i didn't really have the money for the thing but i couldn't let it go for 4k. i'm going to bead blast the case this week if i have time. i think the case will need to be cut for the starter like in the pic above. i'll snap a pic of the p***. side of the box tomorrow and post it.

Remember beads need a final cleaning with detergent...solvents won't gettemallout, and they will kill anything they get to when trans is together.

They are fine, just clean thoroughly and finish clean with lots of soap or detergent.

The case looks like a regular 85hp case.
The A8-7006 etc on the lower rear should be 78-7006 or 48-7006 (or an earlier one)
The top is the good one to have, will work with later gears.
Your best bet is to buy a complete side shift box (they have the later gears and will match your shifter top) and transplant the complete lot into the box you have.
It might be worth trying to find a V8-60 commercial (big gear) case before chopping that chunk out of your case by the starter.
Apologies if some of this has already been stated.

Merc box should contain a 28 tooth gear set essentially the same as '48 Ford. You will need an earlier output shaft to connect it to your torque tube and of course whatever rear cover fits your setup. Mac the transmission guy or probably Modified driver on here can probably turn up the shaft...you'll need to count its splines, there are two kinds.

hey bruce, there's no inards in the torque tube either, so i'm going to need one of those too. here's a pic of the back of the trans and front of torque tube. the rear cover is there so the shaft should be the only concern.

Here's your help! I have a 78 case topoader, a 48 case toploader, and a 39 sideshifter. The toploaders both have blown cluster gears. One has a blown reverse idler also. The sideshifter is excellent. Buy a couple of gears and you'll have two top loaders. $400 for the lot. I'm in Staten Island. PICK UP ONLY. 718-727-6126. Got rears, front ends, torque tubes, etc.
