    Can anyone tell me the right thread size for my toploader trans shifter cap?

    5/16 x 18 aren't they?

    The correct bolts have a smooth shoulder just below the hex head, usually about 3/16” long. This was to help keep the shifter housing correctly aligned with the gears below. You can use regular bolts instead but the correct bolts would be preferred.
