Hello, disambled my -39 3 speed after a breakdown and discovered that it had a 15 tooth main drive gear and a 28 tooth cluster gear:confused:
have this combo ever existed? or is my gearbox put together by an amateur?

I'm kind of hesitant to post this as I'm not SURE of my facts, BUT.......seems like I remember that the number of teeth on main drive and cluster gear in an old Ford box should ALWAYS add-up to 44. Your combination would equal 43. IF that were the case, I have to wonder how YOURS would mesh properly. 28 on the cluster is one of the common Ford counts. Seems like there was a 15 / 29 combination and a 16 / 28. Count 'em both again. DD

As DD states all of the ones I have built added up to 44 such as 15/29 or 16/28. The LZ gears were 26/18 and 25/19. Sounds like a question for the Fordbarn Forum.

Your gears should be either 15/29T or 16/28T combo. The 15T input gear will fit in there with the 28T cluster but they won't mesh properly and will wear prematurely. If the 28T cluster looks ok just get the correct 16T gear (81A-7017 or 8M-7017 are the Ford part numbers) .

We have all the parts if you need help...........MacVP
