Have a 39 TL behind my 8BA. When it first starts up it shifts great. Of course I double clutch. When warmed up it almost always grinds when shifting 1-2 and 2-3. Clutch is new and the truck has less than 1,000 miles on it. I was wondering if the lube is getting too thin. Any help appreciated.
Are you sure your clutch is adjusted correctly.Maybe its not being pushed in enough?? The lube would not be the problem, lube thats been in those for 50 years and 100,000 miles wont make it grind.Sounds like a clutch problem to me. Fedco
X 3 start with adjusting clutch lever linkage to give less travel to disengage, How much free movement do you have before any resistance is felt in the pedal?
It also could be the thrust washer on the 2 -3 hub and the main shaft. It should have very little play. Take the top off and grab the 2 -3 clutch, if it wiggles more than a few thousandths, you found your trouble.
You really dont need to double clutch a syncronized transmission. I am not sure it will help at all. It may be getting everything spinning again instead of letting it slow a little bit. But It shouldnt cause a grind issue either. ***uming the clutch is releasing properly, using a heavier lube may help. We have been using '600w' as used in model A Fords lately, plus it is safe for the br*** innards. Also, check the actual shifter, make sure the ****on and ball end are in good shape. If they are a little worn, they may allow the trans to stay slightly engaged in first gear. Then when you try shifting to second or third, you are still dragging first gear with you. you can some times find this by slowly shifting and making sure you go way up out of the first gear gate before shifting into second. If this reduces or eliminates your grind, you either need to repair, modify or replace the shifter. I have had some sucess just slightly bending the ball end ever so slightly in a vice to help push it OUT of first gear. Not the best way, but one that has had decent results with no reall time or cost involved.
