My friend at college has a '63 T-bird with a 390 in it. The engine is stock for now, but he says he wants to upgrade it. Are there any built AODs that would work in his car? He blew up an AOD in an Explorer with a 5.0, so he's worried the 390 will toast the transmission, but he doesn't want a manual valve body.

Try Lentech Automatics. Pretty spendy, but very quality product.

For bulletproof - try a C6 with a Gear Vendors OD - again, spendy, but bulletproof.

He just built a CruiseO for my '62 Thunderbird, but I saw the kit he had to put a AOD behind a FE.
It is a work of art, kinda wish I had a AOD to build when I did the COM.

The torque of a FE will destroy a 700r.....

If it'll adapt the 700, maybe they can adapt the 2004R to the FE as well. I know they can be built to handle a little torque.

The AOD is actually one of Ford's strongest automatics ever....with the addition of a select few parts.

For a FE, a one piece input shaft is a requirement. Also you will need a shift kit. Torque convertor selection is important as well. Most importently you MUST have and properly adjust the TV cable. Otherwise the trans will be toast in short order.

If electronic controls are ok with you, look at the 4R70W. It's a wide ratio trans (2.85/1.57/1.00) with a .70 overdrive. It's very tough. But it requires a computer to run it.
