Search function here and other places did not show clearly what I am looking for.
I have a '58 392, and want to know if the original location for the dipstick is to the drivers side of the distributor or where exactly it should be.
If it is there, where can you buy the distick and tube, again hard to search for something when you don't know what you are looking for.
Reason being is that the oil pan I was intending on using (pan originally from a 60's rail) has a dipstick 'stub' located in the centre of the pan on the passenger side. The pan has a kickout and is too wide for the headers I am using.
So, I either modify the pan or buy a new, more stock type replacement.
While the intended pan is cool, it may be far easier to go with another pan and this would require moving the dipstick.
I have seen a few pics of the dipstick and tube being up by the distributor, and this would suit me fine, just need to know if this is correct and where they can be had.

The stock location is to the drivers side of the distributor, with a bracket using the last intake bolt on that same side.

I often just go to the local parts house and select something from one of the 'rounders' on display. Plenty of tubes on the rack that are long enough so you can cut them down to a useable length and the sticks can be easily remarked.
I have found that the 'custom' chrome tubes are useful in that the spot welded brackets often pop right off and I have had good success bending the tubes and not wrinkling the plating....but I use a generous radius just so the tube/stick lays over the driver side valve cover.
    Your results may vary.
