392 Hemi starter

Here's what we got...290 Hemi with a 392 flywheel. Does anyone out there know which regular starter or compact starter will work?

 

Did you check the Hemi Tech Index? As far as OEM, you'd use the 392 starter.

 

Yup, with a manual package the starter needs to match the flywheel-bellhousing.
The late peanut sized starters mount differently so there is no interchange.

 

Where do I find the "Hemi Tech Index"?

 

I had to clearance the nose a little bit.

244-1055 is Napa part #
Or 3248 if you call the local starter rebuild shop. My local shop had it on the shelf, stocked for older forklifts. But he didn't have anything for early hemi. Ha.

Actually its the same starter for 3 speed manual mopars thru the early 70s. But When you call the big parts chains, their listings are all "except 3spd. Manual" and they don't have anything more or info on how to get one.

This is what I found when I was looking for a compact starter for my 331. They used the 146 tooth flywheel for the 331 to mid 354 which was for a oem 6 volt starter than switched to a 172 tooth flywheel for 354 to 392 for the oem 12 volt starter. Powermaster makes both compact starters.
