I have a stock 58, 392 hemi and just picked up a WC 3D intake manifold, literally brand new never been mounted. Want to install Stromberg’s 97’s will bolt right on. But I was also looking at the big 97 Stromberg’s that would require hogging out the intake to accept. Stock 97 flow about 165 CFM big 97 flow 250 CFM. i’d hate to hog out the intake manifold to accept the big 97s but would do it if there’s a nice improvement and performance. Is a stock Stromberg‘s 97‘s at 165 CFM to lean for the 392? Wood set up with progressive linkage vacuum port for the distributor old-school look.

  2. Do you really need the extra performance ? What did your 392" have for a carburetor from the factory as far as carburetor CFM ?

  3. After googling I found that 392s had roughly 450-470 cfm carbs stock. Three 165 cfm two barrels would put you close to 500 cfm so on a stock engine you should be ok. If you started cam swapping or bumping compression I might go bigger though

I would try to the 97s 1st. I would hate to ruin that rare manifold by modifying it, like 1 of 75 made. If the 97s are 2 small you can get some 3 bolt to 4 bolt adapters and run some Rochester 2gs.[IMG]

Not sure but I’m sure it was less than 500 CFM. I’m sure I’ll be safe with the 97s. I’m just bouncing around some ideas and getting some opinions. Thanks for the reply

Thanks for the reply. I just picked up this roadster last year motor already had 60,000 miles on it runs good. From what I can tell it’s a stock rebuilt 392, little lifter, noise but good torque motor

Thanks for the reply. Yeah I would hate to machine the manifold, so that’s why I am debating on the carburetors. I could machine the manifold to except the four bolt without the adapter. Don’t know if the Rochester bore size would be compatible with the bore I have, which is 1 1/4

is there any advantages disadvantages by running the Rochester instead of Stromberg‘s. My WC 3-D manifold is a three bolt, which I don’t think would be too hard to convert to a four bolt

Small base 2G's are 1 7/16" throttle bore. While I only have experience with the small base versions, I believe the large base are 1 11/16".

Regarding the 3 bolt to 4 bolt adapters, I have found they work better with a sheet metal divider down the middle; it's easy to do, just a couple of saw kerfs in the adapter and a properly shaped piece of sheet metal.
