Traditional seems to be a very broad term. According to my Dad who is 75 years young and has had more Hot Rods during his life that I'll ever have, it was normal for most cars to have mismatched, worn out tires. To be painted with the cheapest hardware store paint you could lay your hands on and be sprayed thru a vacuum cleaner or bug sprayer. Most guys would never think about proper license or insurance ETC,ETC. Now most cars I see on the HAMB here dont fit into this mold. The Dad says that only a FEW guys in the neighborhood actually had nice cars , but most were marginal at best. HOW traditional are most of us? Do we gas weld all of our ch***is' like in the old days? There were no mig or tig welders back then. Most engine rebuild were just a quicky hone and some new rings on the old pistons.... I'm sorry if I'm steppin on any toes but just sometime the RULES need to be benyt just a tad. Mitch.

Exactly Linkin, it's all about being accepted........OR IS IT??????? I was ALWAYS taught to be your own man and NEVER take **** from ANYONE. The first two amendments are what lets us be who we want to be. Mitch.

Here's a Guide brand license plate/stop light that is also hooked up to the additional (non-traditional) flashers. I dig it so that's all that matters. When people start paying my bills they can start telling me what to do. Step up and send me $50 bucks and I'll take that ****er right the hell off so you'll be happy.

30 years ago one of my best friends was one of those hard core "Model A's only came with one tail light" guys. His roadster was a pain in the *** to follow at night on a road trip because the light was a bit hard to make out at times. That went on until he went on a cross country road trip with another buddy and swapped cars for a few miles and couldn't tell what his own single tail light was doing.
face it it isn't just the latte slurping soccer moms in mini vans that might not be able to see your brake or tail lights. Your running buddies on a road trip might want to know when you are going to stop or turn too.
I'm as guilty as the next guy when it comes to running small lights that are pretty low on the rig. I've also been pulled over by more city cops for said lights not showing up and meeting their approval than anything else I have been pulled over for.
[IMG] The ugly reflectors on the sides of the bed are self defense because the tail light lens don't have any reflective qualities. and yup it will get a sneeky third brake light next time around along with different tail lights.

I looked at the third brake light in my wifes old Mazda this afternoon and those are somewhat small and wouldn't show up much until you hit the brakes.

I remember back in the 50's all the cool after market auto parts places sold these white stuffed cats, whose red eyes were wired into the brake and signal lamp circuit. They were really cool. Sat up on the package tray just like a real cat......Of course for your purposes you might want to remove the bow!!!

WINKY THE SAFETY CAT (sorry had to do it)

I hated to put a third light on my coupe, but I hated hearing locked up brakes behind me more. '38 Ford tail lights on '34 fenders just don't show up much. I use a small black aftermarket light from Auto Zone that I put on about 23 years ago.

I want to keep the other guy off my *** so I have bumpers, and a third brake light on my licence plate frame. I could care less if it's OK with guys on the HAMB.

MY CAR, MY MONEY, MY WAY.

If only I could find one of these in a junk yard car. All dry rotted with most of it's hair missing and kinda flea bitten. Now that would be cool!

  18. Maybe not what your looking for.....but cool and simple....not mine!

Inspiring? Not really, but as in all things regarding safety, I appreciate your need to be safe. Safety equipment is always traditional. Belts and harnesses, turnin' signals, E-brake, too.
Safety First, regular ones up off the ground where they can be seen, unlike some of those down on the ground so low they just might as well not have bulbs in them. Then the third one up a bit higher to give the driver that's following a broader view.

    Keep on keepin' on.

Don't care what you or anybody else thinks...my car, I built it and it's a safer drive because of the third light.

Unfortunatley, you can't traditionally go to the dealer and buy new body panels and parts to fix the damage some ilprogramed transportation conveyence operator did when they didn't look down to see your normal brake lights. Too bad we still have the same old stupidity on the road that was common 50 years ago.

Wow, fellas... if the conversation is about something that doesn't fit in with the concept of the website don't be surprised when you're called on it.

That being said... do what you want to do. Why install a 3rd brake light that's as dull as the other two? So you are going to be non-traditional... deal with it.

Those Mopar trunklights WERE STOPLIGHTS, not conversions. Chrysler pioneered the high center brakelight starting in about 1940 until 51 or 52.
The lamps on the fenders were taillamps only or taillamp/turn signals.
You'll probably find more Chrysler products(Chrysler, Plymouth, Dodge DeSoto, Dodge trucks) with turnsignals in the late 30s-40s-early 50s than any other makes.

I've got some 40-48 Chevy Sedan Delivery tail/stop lamp lenses I always though would make unique center stop lights. They're shaped like a teardrop but not 39 Ford, Plymouth style, longer with straight sides running to the lower point.

Early car tail/stop lamps can be brightened considerably by simply painting the interior of the lamp gloss white, washing/scrubbing the inside faceted surface and exterior of the gl*** lenses, and using 2357 bulbs rather than 1157s.

My 41 Willys sedan (Aussie body) had a pair of factory tail lights on the side of the body just below the window reveal, ao they would be 'head high' by today's standard.

The tail lights on my Triumph weren't exactly small, but I got sick of the sound of screeching tyres behind me cause no-one was noticing them low down on the back of the car, so I scrounged the junkyards for a back window mounted 3rd brake light. I found one in a Daewoo Lanos sedan, a small, curved, flat black 'box' about 6" long and 2" high that sat flat on the parcel tray. You certainly couldn't see it through the Triumph's tinted back window... Unless I hit the brakes.

    Cheers, Glen.

  30. I get confused by all this traditional and non-traditional stuff.

Could someone write down all the rules?

I promise I'll print em and frame em and hang em on the shop door....
