Technical 3W/5W question

Just curious here, I know on Model A sedans the number of windows on the side is what you call the car. For example, if it has three windows it is a 3 window sedan. My question is how/why are 3/5 window coupe's called this when they don't 3/5 windows on the side? Do they count all side windows and the rear/front?

If the coupe has only 2 side windows (door windows) it’s a 3-window and if it has the 2nd set behind the door window it’s a 5 window. All side windows included and rear

 

firstly, the windscreen is not counted as a window, it is the windscreen.
secondly the rear window or backlight is counted as a window

therefore with this logic
it is the door gl*** x 2 plus the rear window = 3 windows
it is the door gl*** x 2 plus the the 1/4 window x 2 plus the rear window = 5 windows

 

No model A 3w's were put in production.

 

I’ve been in the old car world for a long time and never heard sedans called 3 windows or 5 windows.

True sedans weren’t referred to by the number of windows.
Model A coupes were also never referred to by the count of their windows.

 

Sedans are only Tudors or Fordors - yep, spelled wrong by Henry. Coupes - you never count the windshield. If we dive deeper down the rabbit hole, a cabriolet has a drop top with roll up side windows. A roadster has no side windows with a drop top.... and a phaeton is a roadster with too many doors... LOL

 

The cabrios have a fixed windshield frame, too. Roadsters and phaetons have a bolt-on frame and the cowl/dash top flows into the doors.

To go a step further, Sport coupes have a fabric top like a Cabriolet; but it does not fold down. A Victoria has shorter rear side windows than a Tudor and a bustle out back. Also a Model “A” Vicky can have roof fabric to it’s belt line or just painted steel.

 

I have heard the Chevy version of the Vicky sometimes referred to as a 5 p***enger coupe.

 

As opposed to what? As a sedan holds also 5 p***engers…

We can modernize and go next to “bubble” top which was only one year only 1962….. prior to and after are “only” tops, as in only top available.

Why aren’t Model A Sport Coupes called 3w…?

 

They only made sport coupes in one flavour so no need for 3w or 5w. It’s just a sport coupe.

 

They were built like a Ford Vicky with a bustle on the back instead of a full back p***enger area. Google a pic of them, they look a lot like a Ford Victoria.

I understand what you say….its the words “5 p***enger coupe” for the Chevrolet that seems funny.

 

my '29 Chev was called "Six wheel equiped 4 door Sedan" with the rear quarters blanked out and a canvas covered solid roof
in USA they made a Convertible Landau where the rear quarter folded down, only 300 built and maybe only 16 remain
