I have a 3X2 set-up for a 283 SBC with a matching set of 2 jets. Right now the front and rear carbs do NOT have accelerator pumps. Someone told me that this is the way to run em. Is this true? I would think that this will give me a hesitation when I give it gas. ( have,nt run em yet, they need a little re-building) Did the origional J2 set ups run like this?

    Thanks

J-2's had pumps in the end carbs as well as the center. The end carbs did not have idle circuits or power valves. If I remember correctly they had a .058 jet in the center and .059 in the ends.

Ditto, use accelerator pumps on all three carburetors. Run the end ones with slightly richer main jetting, and tailor the pump shot by using the accelerator pump levers with the multiple holes. This would apply with idle circuits in the end carburetors and straight linkage, or progressive linkage and the idle circuits blanked off.

With the end carbs set to kick in at mid-RPM, you don't need pumps, the engine is above stumble revs. Secondaries on 4-bbls don't need 'em!

  5. The Speedway tri-power conversion kit I just installed keeps the accelerator pumps on the end carbs, but you remove and plug up the power valves on the end carbs. It runs great now. The power valve is right in the middle of the inside of the carb. The accelerator pump is the wide plunger deal on the side of the carb.

Not true. Four barrel carburetors with secondary butterflies connected directly with progressive (yes, I know that's the new name for a socialist in the democrat party, sorry) linkage have some form of controlling the opening rate to prevent stumble (usually a counterweighted or spring loaded butterfly above the throttle butterfly) or use accelerator pumps.
