has anybody ever made a ****ty four door into a pick up? just wondering. ive got 60 chrysler 4 door that was hit in the rear a couple of times and im deciding what its fate should be. i figured it might look ridiculous, but would be a cool junk hauler
Depression-era customizers did it all the time. So did he**** companies, they built "flower cars" which were essentially what you're talking about. I've also seen a few front wheel drive Cadillacs get cut down with a flatbed added to the back to make car haulers. But it takes a lot of work to pull off the look without looking like a hack job. It won't be as easy as replacing a rear clip, or parting the car out to fix a 2 door hardtop or anything like that.
edited so I don't piss off zman with an off-topic post. There's an article about this topic posted here from 1980. http://www.motherearthnews.com/Do-It-Yourself/1980-03-01/Convert-a-Car-Into-a-Pickup.aspx
Yep; I made it up from the derelict sheetmetal from a 4-door sedan. The door used to be the back door on the sedan. Trimmed a little here and there, lot's of space. It's a lot of fun. I'm building a 292 L6 for it now........
my idea is to keep the rear window and c pillar and just move them forward to above the rear doors, and then tub what would have been the rear seats and trunk. i have 2 truck beds from s10's that could serve as donors for the inside of the bed. i would just need to make a custom tailgate. put the gastank in the bed and the spare under the car. should keep me busy for the winter.
Those depression era cars were built out of necessity and were called Hoopties. Most of us mature people know what a Hoopty is.
I say if you are going to make a 60 Chrysler into a pick-up it will need a big ol' camper on it to finish it off.
My dad converted our 63 Catalina wagon after a tree limb fell on it. He discovered rust damage from an unknown to him previous body repair, so the quarters came off, too. The box was angle iron and plywood, not at all pretty.
This was also done a lot during WWII because you could get more gas ration coupons for a truck than you could for a car.
Our Holden utes here in aus had sedan and wagon floorpans in em in 56 , my 56 dodge ute (look em up online) was a wagon converted by the factory into a utility vehicle (pickup). I converted mine into a crewcab phantom that seats 5. Ford australia invented the sedan based pickup in 34 and chev australia did it around the same time 35 i think, dodge had em too in the 30's, virtually every make or model sedan or truck at one time was optioned as a ute here..
i just dismantled my phantom 4 seater 42 chev roadster pickup with lift off hardtop, 38 olds front sheetmetal clip with lincoln quads and lasalle grill and its stored in about a thousand pieces in my back garden shed with the ch***is against the back fence. If i could post pics i'd send the only ones i have, in its original tacked together mockup stage.
a buddy of mine took an Edsel station wagon and made an "Ed-chero" (Edsel / Ranchero) out of it. It looked wicked cool because it was done RIGHT and looked like it came from the factory that way. If you take your time and finish the gaps and make nice filler panels, it'll look cool. If you do it like I saw a 68 Dodge Charger that I used to see around here (with the plywood back "wall" and the plexigl*** rear window and no real floor other than the original trunk floor and floor where the back seat was...). I'm a die-hard Mopar guy and even I thought that it was a hideous piece of sh!t that should be crushed ASAP.
when you say 60 chrysler do you mean a 1960 chrysler or a 60 series chrysler from the mid 20's? 1960 - would **** and not be worth the effort 1926 - would be easy to pull off and rule.
Theres a cadillac made into an elcamino sitting out in the field by the car museum here in tallah***ee.
I don't know what 1960 Chrysler you have, but Chrysler Australia did a factory ute based on the Chrysler Royal:
I've got the 56 dodge kingsway version here (U.S. 1954) its channeled 6"s over a V8 74 HQ holden floorpan and ch***is, the cab is stretched to seat 5 with a pancaked 57 FE holden turret and its chopped 2"s. The Kustom mods are too numerous to list. The local resto boys are convinced it was a factory conversion coachbuilt for the electricity commision, who am i too argue with the experts, they know better than me. There upset that i dared to customise a unique one off vehicle, hehehe!. These utes were converted from canadian 4dr wagons the rear doors skins are pinchwelded and leaded in, and overall there a lil out of square in places but unique to australia. I'm also building a 4seater 5w coupe from a 38 ford truck cab.
