    Hey guys
I know this has been talked about before, I tried looking up info but nothing relating to my specific question. Any input would be greatly appreciated. (I hope I put this up in the correct topic)

before my question, here is some pertinent info:
what I have: 1974 Chevy Camaro SBC (mostly stock) with a 4 speed manual trans
The 4 speed is a Muncie, unsure if its a wide or close ratio, what i do know is that the input shaft has 2 splines.. From information i gathered, its got the 3.11 first gear and so on and so forth.

My concern: the car drives great, but I noticed that 1st gear is extremely long and then 2nd is short , 3rd is a bit longer, and 4th is , well 4th.

I don't need the first gear to be that long, nor do i need a bunch of torque off the line , as I'm running 3.55 posi that can help accommodate .

I have a 4 speed Saginaw that was originally a V8 trans, with 0 splines in the input shaft. This is the 2.84 first gear.

My question: will this help with the gears being a little more enjoyable throughout? my goal is that i want the gears to be relatively the same in terms on rpm range and shifting. I understand some people's personal beliefs about Muncie over Saginaw and I agree. But this car wont ever see the strip and I don't pound on it, its purely a weekend warrior and to work occasionally. I have pics of both Trans that i will post here shortly. Let me know what you think. Help me old-timers!

from the research I saw online, isn't the Vega Saginaw the 3 spline with the first gear 3.50?

Never heard of a Muncie with 3.11 first...2.56 is probably what you have with 2 grooves.

3.11 Saginaw and even a 2.88 Richmond for a stronger trans are great for city driving. Easy on a clutch and hard to stall.

update: i was mixed up on gear ratios and no, it doesn't have the 3.11 gear ratio. My Muncie has the 2.52 first gear. So my question is , what can I do to accommodate the long first gear? its not a big problem, i could definitely live with it, the way it is. but for personal preference, id like the gears stretched out a little more. any advice?

A long first gear was a 2.20 close ratio. You’ve got the best you can do without going to a Richmond 2.88 or 3.27 first.

As I recall the 1966 Chevy service manual shows the full size cars w 283 & 4 speed as having the Saginaw w a 3.11 low gear.

I think a close ratio is 2:20 to one and a wide ratio is 2:54 but I could be mistaken.
