anybody have the part number or know which application to ask for .need help getting a hurst shifter for a saginaw that mounts to the tail shaft??.have a vega 4-speed floor shifter that was given to me but seems like a hassle..
Deep first gear in the vega saginaw trans. will pull great in first gear. It depends on the application of the trans which determines the shape of the stick. Shifter box and rods are pretty much the same. I used vega 4 speeds in my 78 El Camino SS after I blew up the original saginaw. Used trans was cheaper than rebuilding the original. Watch your power shifts-I blew up transmissions on a regular basis. Yeah-it was a factory 4 speed with factory 350. Good Luck.
trans is fresh.but what i need to know is that i am looking for the type of shifter that bolts to the tail shaft on my trans tried looking but i only find the shifters with everything except the mounting plate.is it hard to find that kind???
Mutley's right. Also, there is an alignment tool (1/4'' rod) to get the shifter set properly. Put the trans and shifter in neutral, slip the rod or a drill bit in the grooves and then set the linkage. Be sure to set the stop bolts and lock down the jam nuts. Then shift as hard as you like , but don't break your arm!
Use the Hurst steel bushings. They are a lot better then the plastic ones.. You will be glad you did. Tom ( Tired Old man)
you can get all those parts easily, b & m owns hurst now you can call them hurst shifters are fairly universal, it's the install kits that are specific, the handles change out, there are some exceptions but the saginaw tailmount will be a fairly common one i'm thinking
just put a brand new comp + on a vega/monza 4 speed. it fit fine. all i had to deal with was grinding a tiny bit off the bottom front of the mount plate where it interfered with the speedo cable. ok, thats a lie... i had to weld 2 shift rods together for reverse cuz the 1 they sent was too short by half. works great now though. p.s. i remember back in the olden days when that little plastic alignment rod was actual honest ta gawd steel! i guess everything is cheaper than it appears nowadays...
