My 40 banjo axles seem to have a lot of play in the axle now that the drum and hub is off. I’m new to these diffs and am looking for advice is this normal. Rotates just fine but moves up/down and in/out. Thanks for any input and advice. chris.
That is normal. The outer end of the axle is supported in the hub, which is supported by its bearing, which is supported on the axle housing bearing race. Up and down is ok, but it should only move in and out a little bit.
Phew thank you very much! Yah there’s minimal in and out play, but quite a bit more up and down. First time with one of these so wanted to make sure it wasn’t pooched. I really appreciate the help. chris.
Check out HotRodWorks website. There are many improvement opportunities there. Just use the link on his post.
A clever man will ask before diving into the something that is unknown to him. Not always but it pays to be safe.
That thread repair tool might just do the job. Open the tool and close it on the good threads at the inner side of the threads and work out toward the end. You will never succeed if you try to start at the outer end. If it's only squashed at the cotter pin hole you can carefully remove the bent potion of the threads and if it's not mushroomed the nut might just screw on with no ill effect. Since the nut goes on far enough to get the cotter in it will not affect the strength. NEVER hit the end of these axles! They make hub pullers for that. Good luck.
