I picked up some 40s Parts. The rear End is locked up. Everything is off the the backing plates are un bolted. You can rock the axle back and forth very slightly. Should it not run freely? Any idea before I take it apart. Thanks

Pull the plugs in the center housing and look inside. You may find the gears rusted solid.

OK I'll ask......are trying to turn it at the axles or the pinion shaft?

  4. Yes, it should turn freely. It would be easier with a drum on it but it should still turn.

So I took a different act with a Persuasive Approach on the Pinion and Wa la it turned freely.I got these with other parts and was told all great! Exept for the 39 box with a little problem. Well Live and learn. Thanks George

Welllll, Barrnone, you need to get inside one of these Banjos! Dana 44s and 60s are challenging enough (compared to 9"Ford). Its kinda like comparing a VW Beetle engine rebuild to a SBC engine rebuild! The Dana and the '32 to '48 Ford rears do the same job - its how you work on 'em that's different. Lots of stuff on the HAMB to help you through it.

  7. Be sure to hold one axle still and get a feel for the spider gears; had one that turned good; but felt like it was full of rocks when differentiating. Found broken spiders gears when parting the axle out.
